wolf or yote.....

hey all..i was in waterton yesterday and spotted some dogs waaaay off in the distance...a good km....km and a half away....didn't have my binos with me...but they were very big. at first i thought they were yotes (5 or 6 of them)..but they were so big that i am wondering if they weren't wolves. i have seen one wolf in waterton before. and i have talked with ed the ranger there a few times about the wolves that frequent in and out of the park..so they are around.....what do you guys think?? are there tall fat yotes up waterton way? or was i lucky enough to see some wolves again?

You are the one that saw them. I have seen wolf sign around the beaver mines area. There was a pack hit a ranch just north of pincher and several ranches are happy to have preditor hunters on them so are there wolves around yep half dozen big dogs sounds like it what would you say colors were?

they were fairly light coloured...that is why i thought yotes at first.... the one i saw 2 years ago was mostly white...with a few grey patches.


so have there been confirmed wolf kills on ranchers livestock?.......when i was discussing the wolves with ed a few years ago i know the debate was raging whether or not they were attacking livestock or not...

Seems to me, there was a real problem with wolves killing livestock a few years ago, south of the Highwood. We saw two this fall on Flat creek. Sounds like a pretty large pack for coyotes. I agree, difererentiating wolves and coyotes can be difficult at times. Very easy to tell, by looking at the carcass.:D

According to the report here YES these wolves killed one or more calves north west of pincher I also believe I saw to dark wolves just north of the waterton buffalo padocks but they were running from cover to cover I saw them for less than a second or two. Hunting preditors is a good way to start building relationships with the ranch people if you hope to hunt big game at a latter date.

these were pretty cool to watch......i need to get back there with my binos and get a good look.

also say a nice maturing sheep up by cameron lake....he was big and fat...looked really healthy...his curl came almost around to his jawbone...sorry i am not familliar with the sheep terminology.....


then on the way home we saw 20-30 pronghorn just outside of leavitt....was a good day opver all.

it struck me after my last post, that since you were in Waterton, these could very well be wolves that we exported to the U.S. and then made their way back. Illegal immigrants.:D

Quite a few wolves down south. This year there were confirmed cattle loses to wolves along the Castle, in Willow Valley and in the Bob Creek area. Some ranchers said it was the worst year for losses in recent memory. I saw tracks all fall in the Upper Oldman, Bob Creek, Castle River and Gladstone Valley. Never hurts to thin a few.

No u don't need a licence for wolves, at least I think you don't. Well u don't need them up north so i am guessing that you wouldn't need on there. Wolves are considered pests so you are alowed to shoot them.

The regs say quote "A resident may, without licence, hunt(but not trap) timber wolf from the opening of any big game season in a particular WMU to may 31, , or until june 15 in WMUs where black bear seasons are open until June 15." I think your only allowed to shoot them on private property outside of a biggame season.

I thought you had to have a Big Game license of any sort to hunt wolves.?? Also, you are required to register kills and submit the skull in cerrtain WMUs. See page 39 of the regs.

I believe all you need ( if you are an Alberta resident ) is a wildlife certificate and of course a WIN #.
