View Full Version : Summer fly swap?

Ken07AOVette

Is anyone doing one? The last couple were cool.

If anyone were to do it, maybe as people joined up they could put the name of the fly they were donating, so there was not 5 of the same pattern each time?

Also, if everyone sends a SASE in their envelope, it would not cost the person doing it anything.

Just a thought.

I'm in but we have to determine some limits:

How many people and what time frame? Need to give people enough time to get it done or you get those who say they want to participate and don't end up sending anything.

24 participants = 1 month?
More/less ???

Thoughts?

Ken07AOVette

The 2 I did were a dozen people max, think there were 15 and 3 cancellations. The time limit was I believe 2-3 weeks, and if people can't meet the time frame don't say you are in.

Some of the flies I got were amazing, very talented guys out there. My favorite were the absolute tiny ones, very intricate. I would like to see a flyswap without a theme, whatever floats your boat is what you send.

You and 11 others tie a dozen flies, with description and your name on them, send them to whoever collects them, who then puts 1 of each of the dozen sase that we send him. You send 12 the same, get back 12 different ones.
It's cool.

I'm not sure what pattern to go with yet, thinking about my imitation of 'Chubbdarter's' "Blindman Stone". It was pictured in this forum on a thread about the San Juan worm.
That said, If the group is short on drys or terrestrials or something I could fill that void.
What is the consensus?

I'd like in, I have not participated in something like this before. I am looking forward to it though. Here is a thought: everyone tie 13 flies and the person collecting them and redistributing them gets a dozen for running/organizing the whole thing.

I can tie most trout flies. Someone asked for foam and I will comply.

my question is how does a fly like a dry make it in a envelope with CP?

I agree. I've been thinking about the packaging. I've got a bunch of small hook boxes and such that I was going to use to send them back to you so a self addressed stamped envelope is going to be a waste of a stamp.

Also once I know where everybody is located I will deliver some locally and mail the ones that are located up north in a small box. I have no problem covering the cost of shipping them out but you guys will need to figure out how to get them to me in good shape.

what if we send the 13 in a small fly box or tupper ware in one of those canada post bubble envelopes. while a person is at the PO and gets the price for the package the person can purchase another bubble/lope which is self addressed and paid for and send it inside the envelope with the flys. Then theres no cost to you and flys arrive safe. Everyone then gets their container back .

I think about guys like FH7 who have to incur the cost of getting them to me as it is. I will send them back in the containers that they come in but I don't want to force anyone to send a prepaid return envelope. So I will take them however each individual wants to get them to me and do what I need to to get them back to everyone. :)

Ok you are very generous as it is with all the gear you gave away. If you feel like you must, do so. And to the rest of the participants, don't feel obligated to pre-arrange the return of your flies. I am happy to take care of that.

There are some flies coming that will do just fine in a regular envelope in order to get them to me such as FH7's san juan worms so that will help cut costs for some of the senders.

I moved too slow to join this swap - oh well, next time!

Just a word of advice on your containers. Make sure that your containers plus envelope are less than 20mm thick to qualify as oversize lettermail. That requires a $1.25 stamp for most shipments. Anything thicker qualifies as small parcel and won't be delivered...found that out the hard way! :sign0161:

Another thing is maybe we'll have to hook up with FH7 on the Bow one day and show him how to catch rainbows :sHa_sarcasticlol: and maybe he will be generous enough to deliver some packages in and around the Red Deer area. :)

sadly only 4 bows caught out of the bow....but i do know how to get and hook 30 inch browns consistanly!
as for the reddeer area where are you guys looking at? sylvan? BMR?

I can get some tying in next week. Kitchen cabinets come this weekend, I haven't started sanding the floor yet and still have drywall to put up on the ceiling tonight.

It has been a very long week.

Pending a possible Canada Post strike as early as May 25th, those who have not mailed your flies yet may want to hold off until Tues/Wed to see what happens.

If they strike we have quite a few members travelling/meeting up to fish together etc. in various parts of the province. If need be, we'll use our "internal courier" service to make exchanges.

If you have any problems, questions, concerns contact me via PM.

Thanks.

Re: Canada Post Potential Strike

Either side has to give 72 hours notice so they will not strike this week. They think they can get a deal done but no word either way yet.

Yours haven't arrived either yet Pudelpointer but I'm sure they're close. Glad to see you know your priorities. No fun tying flies with an angry wife giving you shots left and right. ;)

Canada post is likely going to start rotating strikes for 24 hrs at midnight tonight beginning in Winnipeg then moving on to different cities in 24 hr intervals so shouldn't affect much if they continue this pattern.

Hi all, sorry but I got sent away for work last week.

Just so you don't think I am COMPLETELY unreliable, here are the flies I am sending. They are a caddis pupa pattern I have successfully used during hatches of larger caddis on lakes. You won't use them often, but when you time it right they are deadly. Cast, let sink, then long slow lift, repeat.

http://i731.photobucket.com/albums/ww311/ian_gazeley/untitled-41.jpg

I didn't throw them in the mail last Monday because of the strike. What do you want me to do Tacklerunner? Mail them?

Mailing them shouldn't be an issue as the strike hasn't really affected Alberta.
