Looks like its almost rdy!? Give or take another week or so?

From the pics the water level looks pretty decent or is it?

Are those the ice shanks ppl left behind on ice?

no those have been at the launch for a couple weeks anyways. there are always a bunch of shacks left around the lake all year, at least they pull them off the ice. i imagine those two will be hauled off soon. The water level is normal, but they are filling Rolling Hills so it may drop a bit, but its a big lake so it wont go down much.

Hoping one of our family got a few tags for either rolling hills or Newell. Anyone fished rolling hills?

Hey Wayne, I was out to Newell on the weekend too. Here's a couple pics. My Dad and I decided last minute Friday night to take a look on Saturday. Took the 12ft'er in the back of my truck just in case. Everything was still frozen as of the weekend before, so the ice just started coming of mid last week I would think. Didn't get anything big (but man was it nice to just get the lines wet), but with ice just coming off, the big hogs are in there, the water needs to come up a few degrees to get them active. We left about 2pm as the mild winds were turning into beautiful Southern Hurricanes! It should be good for this coming opening day and the next few weeks to come. Can't wait to go back soon and let the "Hog Calling" begin!!!

Id be quite surprised if there was a lot of ice left by next weekend, with the warm temps this week and the crazy wind we are having. Hopefully the water warms up a few degrees, Sunday is going to be great! Or Saturday on Newell, might be a bit crowded though.

Yup, Sunday should be busy. I may sneak out on a less busy day soon, but I'll be back there next Wednesday fishing a smaller bay we have been going to since I was a little kid. We call it "Grandpa's bay", as he took my Dad there when he was young, then my Dad took me, now I take my kids. We use to camp, shoot Gophers way back when you were aloud to (made me so mad the first time they put up signs for No Camping those few years back). Used to be able to fish the whole bay from shore, but over the years the reeds have over taken the shore line and you can only fish it by boat, or chest waders I guess to get passed the reeds. For the past 4 years, Every May 11, work, rain or shine we go as a memorial, as we spread some of my Grandpa's ashes in this bay to say thanks for all the good times! Throw some flowers, have a shot of his favorite Rum and hope he's looking down guiding some big Hogs our way.
Can't wait to get back there. Tight Lines yall!

I won't be there for opening day - too busy plus it's Mother's Day. Be careful launching your boat. The ice moves and sometimes breaks the concrete ramp blocks and exposes rebar. I saw a guy tear a gash in the sidewall of his truck tire last year.

Don't forget the bottom of my boat last year there too! Good thing I didn't invite you on that outing eh Lambo?? The launch pads spread apart further down in the water, trailer tire fell in, boat hopped the runners, winch un-hooked and the boat slid off and managed to find the only pc of flat bar on the trailer....SCRAPE!!!!! What a nightmare! Took a while to fix that one in the shop! I think right now I'll stick to the 12ft aluminum, the electric motor and just launch of shore in the bays until all the ice comes off the main lake. Could be the year for a new boat! Who knows. New Job..........New Boat.....I thinks that works??? :)

Hope you made out good today, beautiful weather, and I will join you in a toast to your Grandpa this coming weekend, got a feeling I know which bay it was, and hopefully he doesnt mind if its homemade rhubarb wine instead of rum, of maybe it will be both. Wont be on the bay myself, but not too awful far away. memories like this are what makes fishing all the better, got a few of my own that I hope will never die. :happy0180:

Rum, Rhubarb wine (sounds good!), it's the thought that counts. Thanks for your support! Can't wait to get out again. I haven't even un-loaded my truck from last Saturday yet, all ready to go at the drop of a hat. Good luck on opening day, see you out there sometime!
