Well this has got to be my best day of fly fishing for pike ever......

http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd460/lefty-canuck/fish_2011_1.jpg

Went to the lake and fished all of 10 mins before I hooked into this.....I have a 40 inch tape on my vest and this was a few inches longer....my best guess is 44 inches, naturally I was disorganized and left my scale at home but I am guessing the wieght to be in the 25-30lbs range.

Gotta love spring pike on the fly.....this was a C&R fish so I can get her again another time!

I caught her perfectly in the roof of the mouth....:thinking-006:

Was a good fight, small swirl of a hit and I had no idea she was that big till she took three more screamer runs and did a half out head shake....

I was fishing in waist deep water and once I saw how large it was I decided I better back up and take her to shore....needed to be there to get pics anyways. A guy was there for a walk with his daughter and was nice enough to snap the photos and email them to me......one benefit to the iPHONE....

I use an 8wt rod with 7wt line and a saltwater tippet and saltwater mono leader. Have caught a few 36-38 inchers but this was my first over 40. The fly I was using is one that a buddy of mine perfected for the hogs and he taught me how to tie it. Its about the ONLY fly I know how to tie......well that and a San Juan worm lol.

Congrats again buddy, heck of an accomplishment on the fly. In the spirit of flyfishing for pike, I will be putting up for auction a brand new flybox and several pike flies to get your started, proceeds will be headed to help out slave lake. I will get it posted on the support thread this afternoon.

if it went 44 inches, I would say it was probobly 22-25...it doesnt look like a fatty by any means - but you get above 42 inches and even the skinny ones are 20 lbs. Surely not close to 30, but I would love to catch one even close to the fish he caught on the fly! Congrats again, what an unreal opening day!

like tyree said..... a fish of 44 inches is likely more than 16 pounds. that being said, ive seen 40 inch river fish well under 20 lbs, and 40 inch lake fish well over 20 lbs.

I think I will wear a disguise when I go out there today :) lol

I can guarantee this fish was more than 16 lbs.... Cause I have caught a 16 lbs pike weighed on a digital scale in the spring that measured 36 inches.

That fish is around 21bs-24lb's. That is if it measured 44inches. If it was fatter would of been a monster.

Does anyone know what a replica fish mount would go for? or a good place to get one done? I likely don't have enough pictures or measurements to have one done properly but next time I hammer a big one I might be inclined to get one done up.

Maybe try a forum search. I seem to recall a few threads on decent taxidermists to check out. Make sure to use the "search this forum" icon, as opposed to the very vague "search" icon. You will find way more results. Took me waaaaay too long to figure out there are 2 search options here lol.
Cheers:)
