Ultimate Walleye Thread

Hi, I just wanted to create a thread for all things walleye fishing. Was thinking everyone could share where they fish and what methods they use.
People can give tips, ask questions. I by no means even claim to be a good fisheman :dork:.


I'll go first, for walleye I like to fish sylvan lake. I find that slip bobbering works the best for me. I use braid as my main line and about 2 feet of mono on a small treble with a minnow.

My favorite lure for walleye fishing are orange/chartreuse apex feather flsher jigs. I usually tip them with a shiner and have sometimes even had great luck tipping them with red label herring. These jigs seem to work great up to 25ft of water. Somtimes I will cast and troll baby bass pattern rattlin rapala plugs. When I used these at Jackfish lake, I couldn't go a few minutues without having a bite. These plugs have also worked at many other walleye lakes such as South Buck and e.t.c. My favorite walleye lakes are South Buck, Iosugun, Smoke and Isle.

Fishing Rods used: 6'6 berkely lightning rod rated for 6 to 14lb line and a shakespear ugly stick rated for 6 to 15lb line.

Line : 20lb powerpro. 20lb may seem a bit over kill but it stands up to pike better than lighter line IMO and doesn't stretch so there is still lots of sensativity to feel a bite and set the hook.

Reel: Pfluger President. The same reel still runs strong after 6 years of abuse.



This is one of my bigger catches out of Isle lake on a feather flasher jig. I still have yet to catch "the true hog" though..lol

Just getting ready to leave the UK for a fly in holiday at Andrew lake lodge

Walleye are my target species,was wondering what rod to get on arrival in Calgary?

Walleye: Shimano compre 6 or 6'6 Med fast or X fast? Possibly married with a pflueger president

Pike/Lakers: Similar but med heavy or heavy but in 7'?

Any advice welcome!!!

As for a walleye rod, I think the fast action would be better for trolling as bites can be felt much better than the slower action rod. I think though that a medium action would be a better choice for verticle jigging off of the bottom. The slower action allows for it to be easier to keep the fish on the line IMO. I have also noticed that I have gotten much more bites using a slower action rod while verticle jigging.

Leeches!!!!! Need I say more. Jig a pink headed hook tiped with a leech in about 16 fow at Calling lake. Works at any lake tho. Light to med action rod to feel the bite and have fun. Wind drifting is the best or back troll bounching the hook off the bottom, just move slow. I allways have my best luck wind drifting slowly. Gulp leeches work good too.

Have caught a 8lb out of Isle and know there are bigger.

I mostly use raps for them when I do fish them though as they seem to produce bigger fish than leaches or other smaller bait. I am going to experiment slip bobbing large bait this year for a tournament or two, see how it goes.
