I am looking to purchase a portable fish finder for a canoe. Any recommendations for brands/models?

I got one off eBay for around $40 and it actually works quite well. It takes three aaa batteries and I'm happy with it. By the way my primary use for it is to check depth.

I've been using the Eagle 245DS for years and have been very happy with it. Watch for sales at Canadian Tire or at one of the annual FH sales (I think the next one is in August)

I'm looking to upgrade to a portable Hummingbird 385 GPS unit:

How does the transducer mount to the boat with these portable units?

Not too sure about the new ones, the older ones had a suction cup that stuck on the boat. The cup had a bracket that held the transducer. I dont think they have changed.

Mine has a bracket that mounts to the boat and a bolt and wing nut for the transducer, but i can leave the transducer on the boat and just unplug the main unit if i want, also mine comes with a float attached above the trans so i can just tie the cord to the boat and it will float by itself next to the boat.
