Hi everyone. I am thinking of heading up there again this summer. What I am concerned about is whether the lake got winterkilled or not this year. from my knowledge the lake is shallow and with a cold winter like we had this year the is a risk that it got winterkilled. If you know anything about it let me know.
thanks

I've never been there yet and that is one of the places on my hit list this year. If you do go and want some company, let me know. Unfortunately I don't know if it got winterkilled but I thought there were some deeper holes for the fish to overwinter.

It winterkilled. The lake pretty much freezes solid and there is not really a good source of water flowing in and out. I am pretty sure they stock the cutties every year though.

I was up this long weekend and I'd have to say it is winter killed this year.
When I arrived there were four fly fisherman with belly boats leaving. I asked them how the fishing was and they said they didn't catch anything. They didn't say much other than that. I thought they likely were just guarding their favorite fishing hole. There were three float tubes on the lake while I was there and none of them caught any fish while I was there, and when they came to shore they said no bites, no sign, nothing. I myself have fished that lake for eight years and usually keep my mouth shut on these forums about it. I'm an angler and I'm used to seeing trout combing the shore line, or seeing them jump, and definitely I get bites and catches on almost every trip out. This year I saw no sign, no jumping, no bites, and didn't catch. I've done some searching and the authorities have listed a number of lakes they think have winter killed, this being one of them.
So there you have it. I enjoyed it while it lasted, and hopefully in a few years it will return to it's former glory.

I have also kept very quiet about this lake and would not have mentioned it on the forum since it's such a small lake and increased fishing pressure would likely have a direct effect on it (it's not C&R). Since it's out in the open now here goes, it usually does not winter kill but this was not an average winter and I have it from good authority that it did winter kill this year. This is a crystal clear mountain lake and you can see the fish cruising so I don't think it's just a matter of them being fussy and not taking anything. Even before I figured out how to catch them in this lake I would always see fish even if I didn't get anything. Most of the fish winter killed at Summit this year and it's much deeper then this lake.
I am going to hit a couple other of my favorite hike in cutty lakes soon and I really hope they didn't suffer the same fate!

I was one of the guys leaving if that was at about 9 or 10 on Friday morning. I think it's safe to say that the lake did winter kill, my observations were the same as yours, and Sparrow's Egg usually has risers at some time during the day. Nothing though.
