snowing in the pass on the way up this morning. lots of wildlife. deer, elk, sheep, and sir bullwinkle. high winds all morning making the lake really rough clouding the water along the shoreline. fishing was tough, not an easy task flogging bugs in that wind. caught both bulls and cutts today with missing gillplates.

Yikes!

What is going on with the gill plates??? Is that upper K? Is there test netting going on or something? I've caught a fish or two in my life and I've never seen fish with damage like that. And to catch 2 in the same day?!

Any ideas?

The Bulls were reared at the hatchery....that might explain the gill plate problems.

yes the upper lake. i've caught stocked rainbows with the same gill plate issues as well. the cuttie only had one bad side, the bull both sides. despite the look of the fishes gills it was heathly. fought hard, run right into shore after being hooked and down the shore line, then two solid runs out to lake before surrendering. recovered nice and swam away. i don't know of any other reasons for the missing plates other than hatchery issues. maybe more of a fish bio type of guy has got more answers. i just catch them.

no more tags since ice has been off. are there any tagged fish in the upper, or is that program only on the lower lake? i dunno. i find the bulls are way thicker with more color in the lower lake.
