I got a new 3 year old gelding, (Badger) and a new Border Collie (Bruce) this winter.
My wife wanted to go for a hike and I decided to take Badger and see if we could get Bruce to stop chasing the horses.

It was a great day. (Except for screwing with the GPS.)
Bruce behaved most of the time and Badger was as good as a 3 year old can be when they are the only horse.

Thanks Tree,
I told my wife that I thought she was a good lookin critter too!!
Didn't get the desired result:confused:
I was pretty pleased with the new horse. Usually they get a little jumpy when they are by themselves, but this guy just did great.
I think I'll call in sick next week and do this a couple more times.

Ah, a good horse and a border collie in the backcountry... does it get any better? That Badger's a pretty promising 3 year old, eh!

Nice pics of great critters, Almer. Thanks.

Great Pictures! You are living the dream! What are Bruce's issues? Straight out chasing horses or trying to heard them? Just curious.
Oh ya....very nice critters!!

Thanks,
We have had 3 Border Collies over the past 30 years.
Bruce is just a typical Border Collie with a very strong herding instinct.
Right now he is in his usual position laying under the horse trailer staring at the horses. He'll do that all day.
I was concerned that he might try to nip at the Badger when I was riding.
He was good, but in most pictures he was always 8-10 feet behing the horse:)
One of my many buck offs came from a Blue Heeler that nipped my mare just before I goy my right toe into the stirrup.
The ground never thaws once you reach 40!

Nice pictures...

Your pup Bruce looks like my pup Annie....except she is almost 10 now although you wouldn't know it! She still acts like a puppy from time to time and she loves herding just about anything....

My buddy has some sheep that he uses to train his Border Collies, and he suggested I take 6 for the summer. I've got the room and fencing, but that would be like feeding crack to an addict.
I don't have cattle any more so I'll try to get him into chasing tennis balls.
Man, he's fast!

Hey, Free lawn mowers, perfect! Agility training keeps them focused and they are very good at it.......Collies I mean not the sheep!:)

Awesome, well done AF!. In the 2nd post, looks like in the 1st pic, you're working Badger to open/close gates without dismounting. Keep up the good work, 'cause when you do it with a barbed wire fence and not dismount...when it's your turn, the other riders will be mighty impressed.
It doesn't look as though you've got spurs on. Which is fine for such a tall guy. I always have to spur up when doing gate or pen work as my legs are so friggin stumpy and cannot apply the right amount of heel pressure in the right spot. :scared:. But in the mountains and when hunting, I never spur.

Looking good buddy! :):):):):):)

Thanks,
Mom bought me a new pair of Tom Balding spurs so you bet I'm wearing and using them (gently).
They had an "Extreme Cowboy Training class" at an arena this winter.
I put Badger thru the obstacles there about 6 different nights.
Gates, teter totter, stepping on tarps, curtains, water hazards that squirt water up when they step on the obstacle, wooden board walks, etc.
The training is good. I think the whole sport gets a little pointless as soon as they start timing you. It will be the next BIG thing at the Stampede next week.
Riding that K-Country is about as good as it gets:sHa_shakeshout:
and the best training for a young horse.
