I am wondering if anyone else has a hard time sensing a bite when using pickerel rigs. It seems the fish senses the resistance of the weight and spits it out?

could be the cheap line just not feeling the bite try making your own with better line its what i do lost to many pickerel rigs because of weak line

Never had issue.
Used rigs this weekend to get eyes and just used the lightest possible weight.
The son was using a rig under a bobber. It worked perfectly for him.

Others will just tie on directly.
Are you keeping your line tight?

keep a tight line and a light weight they worked fine on canada day.
jig heads work better for bites tho IMO

I never had a problem. Just buy one of those rod clip bells, Once a fish bites bell rings youre good to go.

pickeral rigs are so stupid they always get tangled up , i just use a hook and small bobber, less obvious to the fish that way to.

you could also try using different hooks on the rig

I use a lindy bottom weight and a phelps floater with the bait on it...seems to work really well. If you want the extra hook you can rig up a 3 way swivel at about 1-1.5 feet above the weight with another phelps on there.

i keep my line tight yes. a lighter weight might be key

Try them with a lighter weight and after you cast pull the rod tip up so there is the slightest slightest droop in your line.

give a bigger hookset too. because you goto move the weight and the line connected to the fish

I have failed using this setup too. I've been fishing from shore at lakes.

I think the issue is that the bait does not move naturally enough on the water for the fish.

90% of the time those abominations hook the fish for you as they swim away with the bait... and in regards to Goldeye...... usually hook them in the big eye they have.

I hate pickeral rigs. I think trout get scared of the metal on it. Anyone know a better set up?

yeah i use lindy rigs when i want to troll for walleye ..they are a good method of slowing down the presentation

I hate using them. I grew up using them but learned to hate them. All I do is put a good snelled hook of appropriate size (that comes with the line already attached) on the end of a swivel or leader. I also attach a weight to the swivel if needed. I like using the powerbait paste for trout as it floats when you put a ball of that on the hook. I like to fully engulf the hook in the powerbait. It also works great with worms, minnows, and leaches. Hang it from a float will work as well.

I fish next to guys with pickeral rigs and out fish them every time. I also use half the bait and spend much less time setting up and undoing knots. Its not the fanciest of rigs but it is effective.

Here we go!...I knew someone would have a pic of this...Can fish this like a pickeral rig too.....putting it out and letting it sit or with a slow retrieve...

With the phelps idea you can introduce a 3 way swivel up 1-1.5 feet from the weight.....for an extra hook at a diff depth if you wanted.

haha of course, i just think they must look so un-natural to the fish, but they can't resist. they work, i just don't think they are worth the hassle.
