Got a question for you fellas. I really got into grayling about 2 years ago and have been fishing a ton for them ever since. My question is what is the average length of the typical Alberta grayling. I've found my average size to be around 10 to 12 inches does that sound about right for the rest of you or are my averages lower then yours?

We only go 1-3 times a year, but that seems about right for our average aswell.

Ive always felt average for grayling was about 14 or 15 inches and I don't recall catching anything longer than a hair over 24 inches. Hard to say though if they look to be less than a foot...I give em lots of chances to spit the fly and larger hooks in smaller soft mouths mean that a lot of the little ones don't get hooked very hard and manage to wiggle free.

They are GREAT on a fly tho...
I'm sure that the reason I land more trout than some of my pals is all those summers trying not to tear the mouth on a grayling when I was kid.

Man your Alberta average is way bigger then mine then my biggest to date is 15 inches out of the little smokey. Just wondering also whereand what with do you guys seem to catch your bigger ones? I usually catch my biggest grayling on an undercut bank opposite myself in slow smooth water larger sized dries. Is this normal cause I've always heard of people catching them in riffles but I only hook the small guys here.

Had a great day on the smokey one year .
We found two spot about 100 yards apart .
First spot we caught around 200 Rocky white fish then walked down to next log jam and caught around 200 Grayling.
This was all in 2 hrs.
Returned every year after that and never caught more than a couple dozen at best.
Once in a life time I guess.
Every time we would place a fly on the water 2 fish would come up to get it.
So we placed 2 hooks on the main line and sure enough 2 fish with every cast. We had tired arms after 2 hrs .had to stop fishing.
Anyone else find large groups like this on the little smokey.

I'd say it all depends on where you go, for a lot of accessible places I'd say 12-14 inches is pretty standard. Some small streams may have an average size under 10 inches, while places like the Stark River in the NWT probably has an average of about 18 inches.
