camping/fishing spot for august long near the Alberta/Sask border in the south?

Can anyone direct me to a decent spot to spend the August long weekend with family and friends near the AB/Sask. border in the southern part of the province?

We were going to hit up the cypress hills but they changed things up out there this season and you can now reserve camp sights.

We need somewhere that we can show up on Friday evening and get a camp site that has some decent fishing available.

I know it is a long shot but I figure this would be the place to ask.

Try duncairn Dam. Its about 30mins south of swift current by the town simmie. Ive got a cabin out there and go out every weekend. Fantastic walleye fishing and some decent pike fishing as well. Use 1/4oz chartuese jig heads, and buy some leeches from the store at the lake and your set. Fish in about 15FOW. Been fishing that lake for 5yrs and worst day was like 15 walleye. Average day youll get around 40 walleye and a couple pike.

ps. there are some monster eyes in there, my biggest was a 31incher and weighed in at 12lbs, but the average eye is probably 2-4lbs.

Without reservations it's going to be near impossible in the Cypress Hills, specially on a long weekend.

Spruce is a good bet for a first come first serve, but it's tenting only.

Ya I checked out cypress tonight and everything is booked solid.

I may have to look at duncairn dam. Is it first come first serve?

How many camp sites roughly are there in the campground? I would be heading out friday when the wife is done work towing the 5th wheel and boat. What is the name of the campgrounds in the area?

What are leeches worth out there?

I will bring minnows and worms and troll around most likely but may chuck jigs if I can't get them to go with trolling methods.

Leeches are $5, but they also sell worms and frozen minnows out there for $5 a piece as well. The campground is right on the lake where all the cabins are. There is probably a good 35-50 sites.

The cabins that are there are they for rent to

I believe they are all private cabins.

They have a good Walleye Tournament there in July too.

Nate. Have you tried the Park on the Sask. side of the hills?

huntsfurfish 03-24-2013 02:59 PM

Oops I see this was an old post. Never mind Nate.

Nope never did end up getting out there.

I hope to in the near future though to check things out.

I would like to haul the 5th wheel and the boat out there and fish Duncairn. I wouldn't mind doing the tourney out there.

I also want to chuck a fly in the hills on the Sask. side sometime.
