Anchovy Rigs for Salmon

Hello everyone,

What is your preferred hook size and leader poundage for salmon? I usually use 3/0 or 4/0 gammy singles and 50 or 60# floro.

Hooks

Mostly run a 2/0 EagleClaw Lazersharp red barbless treble, followed with a red 3/0 barbless Lazersharp single stinger... all tied up with #40 Seguar fluorocarbon.. (I also rig all my teaser heads with about a 3” piece of stainless crab wire, bait keeps better shape, and cuts down on bait use by 30% or more.)

For Teaserheads, you need two tooth picks. One to get the bend right (a roll, not a spin). Other to jam the line in the teaserhead so it is not pushed down causing the anchovie to take too much of a bend and start spinning.

Line for big springs has to be 50 # floro.

For hooks, try a barbless Eagleclaw circle sea 5/0 with a 1/0 stinger.

Takes a bit of work to set the 5/0 at the dorsal and the stinger just in the tail, but the difference with Circle Hooks is that you can have a 30 # spring jump multiple times 20 yards from the boat, and still put him in the net.

On a barbless treble, usually not.

I have been doing this set up since 2001. Lived in FLA for a while. All the big billfish were caught on a circle hook in the tournaments.

Circle hooks were the Only barbless hook that would stay stuck on those big fish with the barbless rules, and the prize money on the line.

Thanks for the input. You guys prefer eagleclaws to gamakatsus?

I prefer 5/0 gamagatsu's and usually use 40 pound test leaders and then 20 pound test on my reels. I use the same gear for all salmon and most of my halibut fishing.

5/0 Grammys Red and barbed ( pinch the barb after). I may try eagle claws this year. Any else find that the factory barbless Gammy’s are ridiculously dull?
