Water for fracing ?
 

Forever I've questioned the use of surface [fresh] water for fracing & other drilling processes. My ? is why not build a pipeline from anywhere on the west coast to an area in central alberta where a distribution center would send saltwater to wherever the frac was taking place.

Better yet, go with a gas frac...no water needed

Because a pipeline that long would be ridiculously expensive and more of an environmental PITA than using local fresh water. I have absolutely no idea how much water is used for fracing, but it can't be that much :thinking-006:. Heck, if I'm guessing wrong and it is that much, just tap Great Slave Lake instead and avoid BC politics hamstringing the job creation project :lol:

Why bother?:D Lots of fossil salt water burried in the depths of Alberta and I think they are looking at using it.

There are many different technologies coming out to reduce fresh water consumption. Wether it be in alternative methods, chemicals, or other water sources. I am certainly no expert on the subject but I am somewhat involved.

How much does local water cost?
How much would it cost to pump corrosive water from the West Coast?

How about we just store some produced water in holding tanks instead of running it down injection wells? It's already unusable for consumption.
Of course, other than the ridiclous cost of storage facilities and trucking to the job site.
I really don't like using groundwater for steam injection or fracing. Hard to replace the millions of gallons used yearly of fresh water. Pump it downhole and it becomes polluted produced water.
The problem is that nearby fresh is much cheaper than stored, trucked produced water. :(
