Are you trapping in a marsh, Pointer? The darned drainage ditches around here are blocked or flooding and it makes for poor trapping. I might have to go with a plan B for a week and head out to the lake.

Runs and culverts with colony's and 110s along the shore line with carrots and the good ol 22 with some solids I got all those rats in one slough theirs still a lot of ice yet in most of the spots I usually trap

nube 04-07-2014 10:26 PM

Are u guys seeing lots of rats where the huts are froze over now with the open water?

Seen some tracks in the snow and I followed them. Bingo hole in the snow so you guessed it 120.

Here are a few to feed your addiction. One is a good size about 12 inches long.

pointer 04-07-2014 10:36 PM

I seen almost 50 yesterday they were coming trough holes in the ice everywhere and today I seen probably 30+ but I didn't look around so much today

C Taylor 04-07-2014 10:44 PM

Only sloughs I'm seeing any is where they have lived in the road banks. Went for a drive tonight an seen 5. I'm thinking I might be smarter to leave them till fall.
Last fall I figgered I'd leave them till march, so I've been wrong before. I doubt there's 5% of what was around last fall

HunterDave 04-07-2014 10:45 PM

I'll let you know on Wednesday night, Nube. The ditches aren't going to work for me for another week or two, either blocked or flooded, so I'm going to go to the local lake/slew. It has huts and I thought that it died out every year, but an older fella told me that I should get my butt in there if I wanted rats. The slew is only maximum 3' deep....maybe 4 right now. He trapped it for +60 years but he said that he slowed down a bit once he hit 75 years old. :)

nube 04-07-2014 11:21 PM

Taylor I think your right and I might be selective of what I trap this spring. I could easily wipe them out for a few years if I hit them hard I think and then I will be a sad boy!! I think I should expect a 90% die off this year I think. Thank goodness they breed fast and a lot

Spring Rats

Picked up 35 the last couple days, huge jumbo springs...love it. Got booted off a lake due to my quad starting to fall through the ice in the shallows. Common sense prevailed and I pulled all my sets. Time to hit the shallower stuff, culverts are almost open here. Dug outs are also opening, getting floaters readied.

Gotta love a big rat I'm in a new area this year and its producing some big rats seems like every bigger one I get had a white tip on its tail

Bears love rats I give all my carcasses to a guy from work he was telling they work just as good as beaver

HunterDave 04-09-2014 03:23 PM

I took a drive out to the slew this afternoon and I saw 5 or 6 rats in about 10 minutes, nice size too. I could have shot them but I didn't have my waders with me. It's only about 3' deep at the deepest point. It has huts on it and it appears that it did extremely well this winter. I'm going to pack up in a bit and set my traps tomorrow. Let the games begin. :sHa_shakeshout:
