Don't worry about how thick it is just make sure you bring extensions

dutchpirate 02-18-2018 08:46 AM

On 40 Mile Friday the 16th. Great ice, 16"+. Lots of bigger snow drifts on top, you'll want some decent clearance to drive on.

Don_Parsons 02-18-2018 10:51 AM

Sylvan Lake is 4 ish + thick, lots of stuck mini vans as far as the eyes can see. LOL.

The fish are biting gooder.

Ye Ha, bring on the good times

Pigeon Lake, Silver Beach area south of the Mulhurst boat launch, is about 36". With my shack sitting 8" above the ice I'm gonna need an extension next time I'm out.

Driving out yesterday was a little dicey, saw a few guys stuck and digging, heading home today the ruts were fine but the snow drifts were wind blown and hard enough to walk on without breaking through. Could be real nasty if you need to break trail.

Fishing was slow, one small pike and a thick 19" walleye on Saturday, a similar walleye early Sunday morning and then nothing the rest of the day. We did watch a pike on the camera for almost an hour but it just hovered at the bottom with no interest in anything we tried.

Fished at the PP on pigeon today, just about needed a extension. Started slow one small walleye in 2 hours. Then had 6 fish on, using the jawjacker in 45 min when packing up, lost 2 at the hole then iced one witch was big enough to fill a b class tag. Wanted to stay longer but I had to get back to town.

How are the Calgary area lakes? Obviously not the closed ones, but Chain. PCR, etc.

Are they still safe, or has the warm weather melted everything too far?

Planning to go on Sunday if possible.

Anyone been out to Beaver Mines? Wondering how the ice is (I'd imagine it's fine), as well as the road in. Thanks :)

Was there yesterday, road plowed, 16 inches of ice under variable depths of snow cover. May be some drifting snow on the way in as strong winds picked up over night.

Thank you! Weather looks good for tomorrow, driving a truck so it doesn't sound like there should be any issues (feel free to chime in). How was the fishing?

Anyone been out on the north end of coal lately? Thanks!

schian 03-30-2018 08:53 PM

Anyone been out to lac ste Anne recently??

pinelakeperch 04-16-2018 04:06 PM

I don't suspect Quarry Pond in Canmore has any open water? I know it's been cold there, but I heard it doesn't form a lot of ice. Thanks :)

Bigheaddoug 04-16-2018 05:14 PM

Rumour is that there is open water on the north end of chain lakes. Anyone confirm that?

Crankbait 04-17-2018 05:35 PM

pine coulee still frozen. inlet canal is flowing good but not full capacity.
bridge area looking punky and a very small area open near shore below the west parking lot at the bridge. not enough though for the most die hard fisherfolk

Crankbait 04-22-2018 06:40 PM

pine coulee open under the bridge, plenty of space to cast with more of that shoreline open after the warm temps this week. open at the inlet too but not much shoreline, but enough for a dozen or so desperate open water fishers.

twin should have more than enough castable water by opening day. the more southerly stream that fills it is flowing extremely high and fast and the lake has risen about 8 feet and run off still has a lot of water coming. didn't check the southern spillway but my guess is that if it's not open, it will be something to see when they do. some country roads flooded.

32" of good solid ice on Carson yesterday. Hammered decent rainbows all day long. Probably going to head back up on Wednesday. Use caution if you are still out on the ice folks!

Holy smokes 32" !! Did you just walk on at the boat launch, still any snow on ice?

SNAPFisher 04-23-2018 10:23 AM

This will be thread to remember. First it started as count up but instead of a count down it is still more about how much ice is left to fish on and there is a lot! Crazy year.

I walked on, someone had recently driven on at the boat launch. Might head back up tomorrow and/or Saturday.

swampy45 04-24-2018 07:30 AM

Unnamed pothole lake (no fish, just checking ice) in front of my house had 28" of ice on it yesterday, Stony Plain area. Ice was getting soft, and definitely degrading now. Use caution if you are out on the lakes!

Lowrance Fishburn 04-24-2018 08:23 AM

With temps expected to hit 25 degrees this weekend, the ice should be off by may long if it keeps at seasonal average.

Crackmacs 04-24-2018 11:56 AM

Was out at Chain Lakes over the weekend. There's a good 10 feet of slush and water around the ice (not deep, but bring extra socks!), but it's a good 2 feet beyond that. I didn't see any open water.

Does anyone know what Spray Lakes is looking like today?

barbless 04-24-2018 05:45 PM

Don't mean to heat things up but.................... say goodbye to the ice for at least hopefully 5 months. :sHa_shakeshout: For us soft water fishers is a blessing right now. Hope all you hard water fishers had great luck great times and good eats :happy0180:

Sundancefisher 11-20-2018 11:12 AM

Lake Sundance in Calgary finally froze over Nov 19. It froze then opened three times.

Now we just need some cold weather with no snow for a while.
