Reels are too stiff in this weather
I took several of my reels outside to see how bad they would stiffen in this cold, border line not useable, any tricks I need to know to get these to work
|
I was told this a long time ago. Maybe there are better ways now.
Take the reel apart and clean off all grease and then apply dry graphite powder to the moving parts. I just use a spool of line in my pocket and hand line ice fishing. |
I cleaned all the old grease out of my reels and replaced it with Molykote 33 extreme low temp grease. Its good to -100*f. No problems on any reels in the last 15 years. Its about $40 for a 5 oz tube.

I ended up using frabil low temp grease and gun oil, difference was amazing

many books, say to loosen drag through the day when fishing in extreme temps, not saying that this is the fix. But You will need to loosen the drag periodically through the day to get the best performance.
Some lower end reels this may not help. |
The fishin hole has the frabil grease. I’m sure cabelas or bass pro would have some too

as with a firing pin/bolt on a rifle, you want zero excess oil or grease in there in the cold.
