6.5 prc

The 6.5 PRC was just listed on AmmoGuide and I found it interesting as I should be able to get some cheaper dies from Hornady than the 6.5 EXTREME dies I had them custom make about 6 years ago. The 6.5 EXTREME has been on AmmoGuide for a number of years. I designed it to run the 140 Berger to just over 3000 fps, in a 26" barrel, with no vertical problems that LR shooters were experiencing with the 6.5-284. Retumbo at 60 gains did that very well and pressures were much less than the 6.5-284.

Hornady legitimizing this cartridge is great as the 143 ELD-X bullet, at close to 3000 fps, will be an awesome hunting tound as is the 129 LRAB at about 3100 fps.

Awesome cartridge. Basically designed to be like 6.5saum. But commercialized. Not sure that it will actually catch on.

This promises to be a great cartridge for hunting with the 143 ELDX. Of course there will be those who complain that 2960 fps is not nearly fast enough from this cartridge but how many will shoot a moose to 700 yards which is possible with 1270 ft. lbs. retained energy. Sighted 2.5" @ 100 yards will Zero @ 250 yards and be point blank to 300 yards on a 6" target. The 147 ELD-M, at 2910, will match the trajectory of the 143 grain to 700 yards with about 12 MOA from a 100 yard Zero.

What is not to like when you consider the recoil compared to a 7mm Mag for example. Also it looks like re-loaders will be happy if this report from George Gardner is repeatable. "Been testing the new 6.5 Hornady PRC all morning, The brass is Excellent, Passed the test of 10 Loadings with a stiff charge on the 135 JLK and 147 ELD with ease. Pockets are still tight and the neck only stretched about .015". For the 135 a charge of 60.3 grains of RL26 yields 3200 fps. No pressure The 147 does 3000 with 58.2 grains H1000, light pressure . These are out of a 24" Bartlein 1-8 twist 5R. Loaded to 2.945"

Has anyone tried this cartridge? It looks pretty nice.

A 6.5 bullet exicting the barrel at 3,000 FPS is just that - regardless of the case it got loaded into.
The various 6.5 cartridges are all great, the only ceiling and drawbacks being pressure and of course action length if a person is going to use it in a particular length .
Barrel life may concern some hunters but it is a non issue for most serious competitors , barrels wear out - period
The 6.5 PRC will survive if the people that want it keep using it, otherwise it will become another " has been " with limited sales and a small cult following .

65PRC sure is easier to say than 6.5-284 Norma. I considered adding 65PRC to my thread comparing 7RM and 280AI, but the prc is so new and a different calibre so i dont think it would be a fair comparison.

Yes I had a 6.5PRC built on a Defiance action, benchmark barrel, Timney CE trigger, Wildcat Stock and so far it's been a pleasure to shoot and very accurate, Gary Flach built it and did a dam fine job of it.
