Lunker Lakeland Lakers

Wondering where to go to catch that trophy lake trout? Look no further than Alberta's Lakeland Region. The winter season has produced some huge lake trout on Cold Lake with fish over 20lbs being caught every weekend all over the lake. With the lack of snow this year, the big lake is excellent for truck travel and anglers are getting to areas that have not been fished in the winter season for many years. The part of the lake in Sask. has been producing more trophy fish this year than any year on record and, with the easy access, anglers can get to hot spots that are impossible to get to most years . The area in front of the Cold River has been the hot spot for big fish for many lucky anglers this year. A few fish kicking the 30lb mark are being caught along with huge numbers of fish iced in a day. Fish are in shallow water in the flats in front of the river with depths of 50-70ft producing the most fish. Work your jig by bouncing it off the bottom to entice savage strikes from these aggressive lakers. White 1-2oz jigs are the go to lure but many anglers are also using large rattling crankbaits that seem to drive the fish crazy. Rattlin raps and live target rattlers in silver shiner pattern are your best bet for this method. Keep a close watch on the always changing ice conditions and always consult the Alberta fishing regulations for size restrictions and catch limits as Cold Lake is heavily patrolled by the Fish and Wildlife service of both provinces along with the RCMP. Come out to Alberta's Lakeland for the chance at your trophy laker of a lifetime.
