Alberta's best Trout Lake
 

Had a convo the other day while fishing the Bow about what we thought Alberta's best Trout lake is. Just thought I would get your ideas

I would go with any small mountain lake that takes some effort to find. My favorite being rainy ridge because of the countless adventures trying to get there. Catching big guys in Minnewanka or Cold or even ghost on downriggers is also pretty awesome though too.

Perhaps Maligne Lake in Jasper

All depends on what your defination is of Alberta's best trout lake is..
Really that has alot of varations..such as what specie of trout , what size of fish , is solitude a factor.. So it all depends on how you define best..

Lake of the falls..Not just for the fishing but for the solitude and the scenery also.

Frenchman's lake is got to be the best secret out there. 10 lbs+ trout caught on average and a beautiful setting too.

The creek is very good too...

mountain lakes are by far the best in my opinion

If you want a view Chester Lake cant be beat and its ony a small hike full of small Cuts. Lakers in Minn or great as well. But I like Bullshead it aint much for a view but a belly boat and fly in there makes for a gret day

I've heard rumors about Kakwa lake, very remote either fly in or back pack. It's suppose to produce on average 5lb rainbows.

Pics of Fortress lake and the fish caught in it make me think it could be in the top 5 for sure. I've personally never fished it.

Even though it is closed, my favorite lake is Job or Blue Lake. We used to catch up to eight pound cuthroats in it. It is a very beautiful Lake and settting. Maybe we could get SRD to make it a catch and release lake on a draw!!

As far as fishing and catching some I like Coral Lake....golden trout and what a view!!!

I like that idea however isn't going to happen. Rawson maybe a sub for you.

Jackfish Lake!
 

Jackfish lake, small pothole lake east of Two Hills, AB. The lake is now dead for about 4 years as far as I know due to low water levels and the SRD taking out the airation system. We went their for a weekend in mid May for 3 years in a row and the lake gave up 1/2 dozen 6lb plus rainbows to our group each time their. The largest was 9lbs caught by my now deceased sister. We also caught several 3 pounders the first couple years we went their. The big males had great colors and the start of big hook jaws, the females were very silver and fat. It was so awesome, it almost makes me cry thinking about this little gem being gone!

I'm going to throw my vote in for Police Outpost as well. There's about 5 different lakes down there i struggle to chose between but now that Police has the special designation i think it will be the winner (i didn't get out last summer but heard it was good as always). I'm hoping to get out there one day this spring, will see when the ice comes off.

I have been to Lost Guide a couple of times and really enjoy this for the veiw the fishing is not bad either. Sometimes can see 16 to 18 inch Cutts but can't catch them. Most are 8 to 12 inchers that I have caught.

WHAT ??? :huh: It never crossed my mind till I got a few posts...

Swan Lake east of grande prairie used to be an awesome trout lake, but the continuing waste being thrown into the lake, as well as the constant fishing pressure has ruined its status as a primary trout lake. However once ice is off I know all of us guys up here can count on being shoulder to shoulder with fisherman on shore, as well as float tubes and aluminums everywhere to be seen, it is packed.

Although Chester is full of cutts,it's ablertas only Dolly's that draw me there.

For #'s Elbow is hard to beat,for nice chunky cutts picklejar is amazing as is lake rae and tombstone.

Bullshead...lots of big fish!

Both Fortress Lake and Kakwa Lake are in BC...I've been to Fortress a couple times, and without a doubt it's the best brook trout fishing I have ever seen...but I've yet to catch one over 5lbs (5 solid days of fishing).

If I had to pick a lake in Alberta for trout, it would definitely be a mountain pot hole lake...since you guys want a name, I'll throw Amethyst out there. Somethings just have to stay secret!

It is quite a lake isn't it. See a lot of fish, but tough to catch. Great place to surprise a few rams for pics. in the summer also :)

I understood fortress was actually half in alberta half in BC. Is this not true?

I'm going with Cold Lake for Lake Trout... Fishing just seems to get better every year...

The best trout lakes indeed are in the Rockies.

Fortress is in BC..All of it although it was orginally stocked by Jasper National Park.

Amethyst is awesome.

There are mountain gems all through the Rockies but to find them requires your exploration and research. You can always message me if you need a little direction, want to swap good info or if you need company.

Definitely Fortress... in 3 days last summer, 2 of us caught several over 5lbs and one that was pushing 8.
