I hear people say often the 280 remington is the best of the best in its class. Curious what really sets it apart from others like the 270 win and 3006 or even the 2506?

Always bin a fan off 270 win and anything 6.5,I think the 280 rem has a slight edge if you are a reloader.Heavier bullets available in 7mm with good bc's.

PS: I've had a few 280s and really like them, but I also like 30-06 and 270. No animal ever knew the difference

Nothing special about it.....until you ream it out to the 280 Ackley Improved....then it will drop a buffalo at 1000 yards and shoot around the moon and back.......oh wait,...I might be confusing it with the 6.5 Creedmoor....LOL...carry on.

Realistically nothing,

Its a slice between the 270 (same trajectory, slightly heavier bullets and a little more KE) and the 30-06 (a little flatter, not as heavy bullets and a little less recoil).

Had one and loved it until I caught the AI bug, went 280 AI and as blasphemous as it sounds is now 'the rifle'

Truth be told, writing was on the wall that the 280 was not going to last so I went the AI route, if it looked like it would have hung on I would still be shooting a 280 Remington and nothing but.

Its a great caliber and cool to boot, but does nothing that the 270 and 30-06 wont

The best part of a 280 Remington is the drive to the smith to get the AI reamer ran in it. Now you have the ballistics of a 7RM with less powder, no silly belt, and less recoil. You must also announce loudly at the range that you have a 280 Ackley Improved as everyone need to know to be aware of who you really are.

Yup got mine, if I leave it out of the case or save over night I wake up covered in ladies.

I own one custom Sako in 280Rem. Great cartridge. It works well on deer and moose. It has better bullet selection with high BC than 270 and 2560 and little bit lighter recoil than 3006, otherwise it is very close.

I had a .280AI built, and it shoots great, and everything. But after monkeying with the boys .280 Rem I’m convinced I probably would have been just as happy with a regular .280 Rem.

This from a guy who’s .28 cal addiction started with a .284 Winchester.

Magic. That’s my only explanation. The cartridge is somehow magical. I’ve killed moose over 500yds, elk over 400yds, I watched a friend kill a deer at over 700yds, and it seems like the bullets have heat seeking abilities.

I’ve had all kinds of cartridges but if I could only have one it would without a doubt and by a long shot be the 280.

That being said, I stick with my original statement...... magic.

Absolutely love my 280. It's the goto in my gun safe. Great selection of bullets and reasonable felt recoil for me. Everything I shoot with it folds up fast with the 140 ttsx.
And I own a 30-06 and 7mm rem mag.

Advantages over the 25-06 and 270 are heavier bullets. The 175's my dad used for years in his 280 worked great on everything from deer to moose. He had the 270 for about 17 years and always wanted something with a little heavier bullet when it came to elk and moose. The 270 worked fine but he always felt the old 303 he hunted with performed better on elk and moose with them not traveling as far. He owned the 280 for about the last 20+ years he hunted and was very happy with it. Advantages over the 3006 is a little less recoil.

Love the idea of the 280. Debated it for a long while.

Ultimately decided to shoot 150 gr bullets so went with the 270. If you want to shoot 160+ class bullets then 280 or 3006 make a good choice, but all three are splitting hairs.

Currently own 6.5-06, 270 (wife's) and 3006.
All great. Selling the 6.5-06 because I have less time to tinker than I use to.

The 6.5-06 Cooper has very light recoil compared to the other two in Rem 700, but all three are very manageable.

I took a .280 Rem 700 on trade years ago, as it seemed like a fun cartridge to mess around with. It is now my go-to rifle for everything. I tried many different bullets in it, but settled on 120gr TTSX. After owning a ton of different rifles, I just found myself always coming back to the .280 Rem. Produces a tight group with minimal recoil and excellent stopping power.
That being said; I have had great results with other cartridges as well. The .280 just seems to suit me the best.

The 3006 being the oldest is factory loaded to the lowest pressure of the family, the 270 being years newer is loaded a little hotter and the 280 being very new and modern in terms of the 3 is loaded much hotter from the factory. A handloader given 3 identical rifles 1 of each cal. will likely never appreciate anything more than the bullet selection for a 7mm.

Not correct about the .280. It is loaded down in factory ammo due to being chambered in semi-auto rifles a lot in the earlier years. Just need to look up the SAAMI max pressure specs for the cartridge.

.280 Rem is SAAMI spec for 50,000 Cup pressure, just like the 30-06.

Which makes zero sense since the .270Win was loaded in the same rifles as the .280 Rem but some 34 years sooner.

.270 Winchester is a 54,000 CUP cartridge.

Have three 280’s. For some reason I’ve never shot any game with it. But that’s going to change. Have one in the safe with a new Benchmark barrel unfired. One of these days I’ll get shooting it.

I had my first one in 1984, and have several more in my safe. Used smaller and bigger rounds, that knock your hat sideways. don't kill any better, the 280 is well balanced and can take all non-dangerous game here. JMO try one and don't look back. It just works. K C O. !! Cheers
