Long weekend sturgeon

Had a good weekend down on the river, the weather was great, barely any wind most of the time. Fishing was fairly slow with the rising waters from the upstream rains. Met another forum member and his crew and got to watch an unscheduled diving demonstration by another camper. Moral is, dont get too drunk to stand and hang out on a riverbank :bad_boys_20: I managed 5 sturgeon over the weekend, from 50 to 53 inches, as well as the usual bait stealing moon and goldeyes. one sturgeon I caught had some serious damage, thought at first it was line cuts, but it looks like maybe something happened in the flood. other than the gory details the fish seemed otherwise perfectly healthy.

Wayne and I are friends, one of his rods is a 40 year old steelhead rod I traded him for a 10 foot medium light moochin rod (we both had needs that couldn't be met),, his other rod is a deal I got him on an Ugly Stick Tiger.

He knows I'm joking when I say BOOOOOOORRRRRRIIIIING!!!!!

We forget sometimes that nobody really knows who knows who on here.

No apologies and none accepted,,, I didn't notice how long you've been on here.

It's all good as they say.

It takes awhile to get into the flow of AO - hey that rhymes, I should tell Leonard Cohen.

Start posting pics and stories Secret Coulee, then we can start picking on you in the friendlier older way of doing it.

And, welcome to AO Fishing Forums, a place you will soon forget and forget why you came back.

Gust only problem is the flood washed away a lot of the bottom, so its snags trees and rocks now, so a stout rod is sometimes needed, definitely time to use light line for the weights, had a few hooks stuck and breaking 80 pound braid is not much fun! still have to hook me a 5 footer on the steelhead rod, Im sure it will be up to the challenge, Id hate to break a rod with a lot of history. pretty sure my 6 foot monster is still hanging about, saw her jump a week ago, or her sister. that one I want the tiger for! :fighting0074:

I'd be ok with it breaking on a beast.

I was thinking about different weight setups for situations that you and dago mention and was thinking either about little sacks of sand or a long sheet of chainmail. Sacks of sand made with durable, super LOW sensitivity, army grade condoms would be good, just enough to tear and let the sand go but not the rubber in the process (for the youngins on right now,, we used to call condoms rubbers). This way you wouldn't lose your rig and could actually fish in the rootier rockier areas.

Love it there. Can't wait to go back! That poor sturgeon looks sore but somehow I doubt it slowed him down even a little :p Can't wait to catch my first.

WAY TO GO WAYNE. You mentioned the other AO member and his crew. He is my friend Steve and he was raving about you. He is an awesome dude and so are the girls they brought with them.

waterninja 08-07-2013 01:20 PM

slow day? only 5 dinos? i wish.
every time i see some of your landscape pics. i can't help thinking of those old westerns where they are going to cross the rio grande into mexico. do you also have sagebrush and cactus down there?
not knocking your part of the country, it does look beautifull but i don't think i could ever get used to living somewhere with no trees.

WayneChristie 08-07-2013 03:11 PM

Ninja a lot of those westerns could have been shot anywhere around here, cacti, sagebrush and rattlesnake country, I love it. That was 5 over a couple days, its slowed right down for a while. Jacen they are good people Id hang out with them anytime and hope to again soon. Btw no way those girls with them were dudes :bad_boys_20:

A little polysporin and that fish will heal right up. Good to see you're still getting a few Wayne.

Long Weekend Sturgeon

Have any of the AO sturgeon fishermen looked for the
ID tag on their fish?. A few years back, some of us caught & tagged
a number of lake sturgeon, look along back near fin.
The Government biologists would probably really appreciate the
number if you do see a tag. Numbers are really small and hard to read.
Thanks for the great stories & pics.

Wayne is part or thr tagging program....

WayneChristie 08-08-2013 10:15 AM

:)Been tagging for a year now. Not using the floy tags anymore so you need a scanner to be sure. Couple under 30 inches so far this morning and the green
snotweed the flood washed away is back, yay:angry3:

long weekend sturgeon

Pleased to meet you Wayne. I was not aware of the new tags.
I've fished only the NSR & Snake in Idaho for sturgeon.Must admit tho to a 75 year walleye chasing addiction. Do you shore fish?.
Take Care.

WayneChristie 08-09-2013 05:58 PM

At the moment Im shore fishing, til I get a new foot for my jet. My addiction is sturgeon, havent found anything else that compares :sHa_shakeshout:

Like to catch the larger whites, but they are all super fishing. Never have caught one surfacing & doing the 360, getting old and slower reflexes
I guess, or blame it on a slow camera.
Used to know a Don Christie EPS, any relative?
ODT

WayneChristie 08-10-2013 04:41 PM

No relative as far as I know. Unless he just won the big lottery :)
