Elk Bullets
Yes, new bullets have hit the market
What's your go-to elk bullet !! let's say out to 350 yards Dosen't matter bonded , mono's or cor-lokt or ? New Terminal ascent and the fusion tipped are interesting . What have you had good success with and maybe the one that made you change Pics and stories are good |
Mono’s for me.

Barnes 150 TTSX in my 7mmx300 and 165 tsx in my .30-06 both result in dead elk.

Nosler Partitions

Depends on the cartridge, or more precisely the impact velocities expected.

Imo elk are the toughest animal we have in canada so I load nothing but barnes lrx and as fast as they can go.
|
After 30ish years of using only Nosler partition and Accubond bullets I have done two things: I have converted to Barnes, especially the LRX, and I am now packing a very trim 280 Remington in place of my REM 700 based 340 Weatherby. Broadside and quartering to shoulder shots on several bulls have shown the 280 to be a very effective elk killer, and not nearly as rough on the owner/operator as the 340!

Partition, accubond, ttsx and just put it in the right spot .Nothing lives with no lungs .
Weight all depends on the cartridge at normal top end velocities at POI . |
NP's followed by ttsx...honorable mention goes to accubonds, interlocks, and sierra hpbt's

7mm rem 162 interlocks or 160 accubonds
338 win. 250 interlocks 270 win 130 gr interlocks or accubonds .257 roberts 110 gr interlocks .257 weatherby 100 gr interlocks or 100 ttsx 308 win 150 gr ballistic tip 300 win 180 gr ballistic tip, 180 interlocks 3030 150 interlocks .243 100 gr interlocks I load for 9 hunters in my family. If you shoot em in the lungs they die. I have a pile of components from days gone buy. When my nosler pile is done. I refuse to pay the nosler tax in the future. Interlocks kill just as good. In normal conditions |
I used a .338 Federal, 200 gr Trophy Bonded Tip for my elk this year. 95% weight retention and excellent expansion. It worked. Predecessor to the Terminal Ascent bullet. I'm a fan.

Hard cast. I typically kill elk at bow range with my 45-70. Hard cast work awesome when you pound one through the high shoulder. For longer range I have had good luck with monos, Accubonds, And Partitions...

225 GR Accubonds out of the 338-06

Barnes tsx, ttsx, lrx or nosler partition. Nothing else IMO.

Woodleigh Weldcors for me with the mid bores. Tough, accurate flat based bullets.

seems a movement to the copper .
If lead is bad for the health why use it over any mono . Do mono's foul more than PT ? barrel ... I could never understand the argument that the TSX needs cleaning after 20 shots or so .. Slow velocity = no expansion .. Not sure how to ask this , if the TSX is perfect why use anything else ? I use the partition and TB almost exclusivley, but maybe it's time |
The fouling was bad in the original X bullets, many members here have stated so.
But Barnes reworked them and now I shoot hundreds and don’t notice much for fouling at all. |

The market availability on some bullets has driven the cost up like partitions etc, but I won't change my hunting bullet unless I couldn't find any .Cost of one bullet to kill is the cheapest part of hunting .Target is another game In the past 50 year everything I used a partition on I recovered real easy, maybe animals are now tougher then 50 years ago . We have better optics ,rifles ?, clothing ,vehicles to recover ,better tech for reloading ,range finders , Chronos ,more info then ever before on hunting . One thing will never change and that's bullet placement once you pull the trigger ,So I never over complicate things . My hunting rifle is made for my hunting purpose only so my bullets change very little . I have shot stuff with the ttsx in another rifle while hunting and there very good . I use to think the more rifles I had or better bullets always coming out the better hunter I would be ,totally wrong . I wasted so much time screwing around testing this and that in different rifles I lost count off. So really I lost out on the best hunting in my prime ,biggest mistake I ever made . Chasing something that didn't need changing . |

Shot Nosler Partition and Accubonds for years. Pretty much switched my sons and my rifles over to Barnes TTSX or LRX. Never had a failure to fill the freezer. Main reason I switched from Nosler Partition and Accubonds was lack of availability and price of Nosler.

This has been my experience also good performance from Both. My .30/06 shoots the 165TSX more accurately then the 168 TTSX which is to bad because I believe the 168 was designed for the 06. I’ve shot a moose and a few elk with it pass throughs and clean kills aside from one which requires a second shot but the first one was my fault. |
