Allen Bill

Anyone know if the ice is off yet and if it has been stocked yet?
Thanks!
Cheers

If you post the stocking date...expect a million anglers with you.

They stocked Allen Bill 4 times in 2010 starting in May. Not sure yet for this year. It gets hit very, very hard and the limit is 5 a day. You have to go there fast. Using a size 16 black chironomid under a bobber takes its fair share of the school as it swims by. Also just try a hook wrapped in dark brown wool. Fish pellet fly.

This limit of 5 is way to high for the fishing pressure. Two years ago I went there 2 weeks after stocking and the chance of a kid catching a trout is zero. Allen Bill and Mclean should both be 2 a day...max. Did anyone fish these two lakes a lot last year? If so what were the catch rates over the Summer?

Over the summer 2010 they stocked 9,900 trout in Allen Bill. 6000 in 2009. Zero in 2008.

Over the summer they stocked 7,100 trout in Mclean Pond. 7290 in 2009. 7200 in 2008.

These ponds may require heavier stocking but there is a huge cost. Being so close to Calgary it probably makes more sense if you were to keep the 5 a day to up the stocking by adding a few more truck deliveries during the Summer. The alternative is to spread the harvest out fairly over the Summer and maintain some fish to catch...

Thanks for the info but im well aware of everything you said. For the record they stocked it more than twice even though the records show different. I confirmed this with the Fisheries officer. The pond is intended to be fished out by a million anglers......thats why it's stocked. Would you rather have the people at your fav fishing spot or at a stocked pond? I fished them several times before and I usually use it as a place to bring people who want to get out to catch some bows.

Either way, question remains.....can anyone confirm if the ice is on and is it stocked yet?

Attitudes towards info on stocking dates

Seems many believe that knowing the stocking dates will overharvest a pond. I personally believe that happens anyway and those fish are there to harvest and help reduce pressure on wild stocks. This protectionist attitude is a popular contempary phenomenon that makes no sense in this situation. There are very few waters close to Calgary where you can harvest a few trout. Some people want to eat a few pan fried trout, give it a rest and let them!. Decreasing retention numbers at the beginning of the year then increasing as the year comes to a winterkill end seems a better idea. If the lake doesnt winterkill then reduce the daily retention year round.

kicking around in my float tube in mclean last summer one night... i literallycaught 30 rainbows in about an hour and half. Threw all of them back. I never keep anything in those little ponds.

Let me just answer the question :) Allen Bill pond is stocked and even though there was some thin ice left (Saturday) is probably gone now. The biggest trout I saw caught was 35 cm and probably 1 lb. Compared to last year there are bigger fish stocked but there are also smaller ones. It is a really good mix in my opinion.
I hope this helps. Tight Lines!
