I think that should really be "How big WERE the pike in Hanmore Lake?"

A lot has changed since 1971. Alberta's population was 1.6 million in 1971, by 2016 it was over 4 million. That's a whole lot more fishing going on nowadays, so I'm betting no-one ever takes a 34 lb pike out of Hanmore ever again.

Heck, even up into the early 90's one saw the odd trophy pike get caught out of central Alberta "lakes" that were pretty much just glorified sloughs. I now get to fish some of the best lakes in northern AB regularly... and now we catch the odd trophy pike out of them :sign0161:

63cm we paid people to manage us into this predicament.

Yea.... last time I fished that lake was ‘86

Saw some big whites... had and lost a really nice jack on a tulip.

I used to see and catch hogs at Mons lake (we called it bear lake for some reason), Bellis Beach.... whitefish lake....brodeck lake too. But that was back in 78-85.

I would love to see how some of those lakes shape up now.

But then I’d miss days on my rivers down here.

Mink Lake just west of Stony Plain had massive Pike up until the mid 90's as well, just like most lakes around Alberta.

We have done this to ourselves, and if we don't change how we fish, we will continue to not see changes to our fisheries.
