Matchayaw (Devils) Lake

Hello all. Has anyone been out to Devils lake recently ? I want to take the kids out on Sunday. Just curious if safe enough to walk out on the ice . Thanks in advance :)

Plenty of ice for walking on! Just use caution as it’s still early season! Good luck!

Don't let the kids run around too much, there are a lot of springs in that lake.

Ya, a few have lost their lives there. Good luck with the fishing.

Thanks guys for the tips. Is there a particular safe area to be with the kids ? Ill be entering the ice from the boat launch .

Look on google maps satellite layer and you will see where the creeks and Sturgeon river come and go from the lake. Those areas will be more prone to currents. There could be springs aside from the creeks too.

If you are taking young kids, I would pick another Lake. Devil's Lake is a very dangerous lake at the best of times. Between Current, rotting vegetation and Springs there are a lot of places that can cause problems. Morinville Reservoir, Cardiff Pond or any of the smaller trout stocked ponds are all much less likely to have a problem as long as you stay back from the aeration opening, plus you can see where others have been walking and fishing. Even Wabamun and Lac St Anne are better choices.

Good call, but be careful there too.

Thank you for the advice . I've decided to wait a few weeks. Ice reports out there sound sketchy.
