Snowy owls

Has anyone seen any down south this winter? I havent seen a single bird this winter and we usually have at least 4 I see regularly.

Bushmaster 02-04-2023 08:26 AM

I haven't seen one....but due to the early snow some of the back roads that I normally travel to find them are plugged.

I make several trips to Taber every winter and I typically see 6-10 snowy owls on every trip. Sometimes more. This winter nada. Used to break up an otherwise boring trip. Kinda miss them

Didn't see the usual numbers of Snowy's during the November hunting season, but they were around.
We saw more Bald and Golden eagles this year though, above the average numbers we generally see during that same time period.

I usually see lots from Keho to Bow City, but haven’t this year.

Not sure how the weather's been up North for the last few months but overall I think the temperatures are warming in the Arctic probably that's why they're not coming down

Avian flu?…

Sundancefisher 02-04-2023 10:46 AM

I haven’t seen any around Calgary. I used to see them all the time along the highway just north of St Albert.

Bushmaster 02-04-2023 10:50 AM

Have you ever seen one sitting in a tree? I haven't...always on the ground, on a fence post and mostly on power poles.

I guess I’m the anomaly in the discussion. I’d say I’ve seen close to average numbers in my travels. I haven’t been out and about for 3 weeks or so mind you. I bet that I saw 6-8 in a few hours of driving around glassing grain bags for sheds one day.

Have seen at least 2 snowies where I work. They have different characteristics about themselves. Lots of Bald Eagles for sure. The Eagles only show up when it starts to get cold out. HMMMM? Gotta be out early to see the owl's for sure. They love rabbits and we have lots at work. Landfill. We had a Great Horned in our truck barn and the Pidgeon population went down big time.

I usually notice the most snowy owls in February.

I did see 4 different bald eagles a couple weeks ago during a 15 minute drive. That was a new record for me.

Bushmaster 02-04-2023 12:55 PM

Some eagles pass thru this way when migrating.

I have to agree with this ^^^. I have never seen so many dead geese and raptors this last summer.

Dodger.

I have seen a few. But not in numbers like the past few years. But not really looking for them either.

Bushmaster 02-04-2023 02:57 PM

This spring I was in some fields seeding....lots of sign of dead snow geese!

I usually see quite a few while hunting 108 and 102. Only saw two this year, one near Vauxhall the other near Manyberries. Strangely, the one by Manyberries was in October during my Pronghorn hunt. First time I saw one so early in the year.

Big Red 250 02-04-2023 04:14 PM

I'm on a Manitoba Bird Group and there's pictures being posted every day of these beautiful birds.

WayneChristie 02-04-2023 06:42 PM

still no snowys but I did see a bald eagle today near Little Bow sitting on the ground. There was a golden near Newell a couple weeks ago I was surprised to see it

Grizzly Adams1 02-04-2023 06:48 PM

Usually several on the power lines between Olds and Three Hills. I haven't been out that way lately.

Northwest MN here.
Last year they were EVERYWHERE.
Haven't seen ONE this year.
Maybe why the Hungarian Partridge are quite common this year.?

5 minutes north of Taber, didn't see my resident snowy owl on my empty 4 acre parcel the other day, but doesn't mean he wasn't there. I seen him several times throughout the latter part of fall. What I did see on Saturday was 6(!) full grown bald eagles in a 2-3 square mile radius, all soaring in the wind. Could barely get my work done there were so many. I am up to probably 25 different bald eagle sightings since Christmas, just between Taber, Vauxhall, Bow Island, and Hays.
