Caught this guy in Red Deer River, wonder what kinda of fish this is. Could this be a white fish?

cleson 08-11-2010 07:53 PM

looks like a mountain whitefish. I haven't caught one since I was a kid though.

seahawkfisher 08-11-2010 07:54 PM

yup rocky mtn white
nice catch!
cheers

the local angler 08-11-2010 09:02 PM

i have also caught those before and i was told those are river chubs.

blwlaw823 08-11-2010 09:14 PM

By the way, this fish don't have teeth :)

RedFisher 08-11-2010 09:30 PM

100% Rocky mountain whitefish ....:bad_boys_20:

BrainTan 08-11-2010 09:45 PM

I'll put a vote in for goldeye as I don't see an adipose fin and the mouth structure and scales look off to be a rocky to me

300MAG1620 08-11-2010 10:19 PM

sure dont look like a rocky mountain whitefish, catch lots of rockys in the mcleod and they sure dont look like that

DuckBrat 08-11-2010 10:23 PM

Sorry thats not a whitefish or goldeye. Looks like an invasive species but will check, any other photos of this specimen.

better quality picture

DuckBrat 08-11-2010 10:33 PM

Northern Pike minnow (Squawfish) but I did not think we had them in Alberta I'll check the fishes of Alberta book.

wind drift 08-11-2010 10:33 PM

it's a flathead chub, guys

...a large member of the minnow family that inhabits large rivers. I've caught them nearly a foot long in the NSR.

Calgaryguy1977 08-11-2010 10:34 PM

That's definately a rocky mountain whitefish....I caught 2 12 inchers tonight on a red tail prince nymph. btw these aren't pictures of the ones I caught. You said it didn't have teeth, in fact the mouth kind of looks a bit like a sucker...in a way. No longer 110% sure....lol

Flathead Chub
http://www.bio.txstate.edu/~tbonner/...20gracilis.htm
caught a few as well, absolutely tasteless meat

wind drift 08-11-2010 10:45 PM

Nope...not a mountain whitefish (no longer called Rocky Moutain whitefish)...it's lacking an no adipose fin. Also, the upper jaw extends too far back. I'm not guessing here...it's a flathead chub. It's a very cool catch. Nice!

I assumed it was flattened down as the pic isnt very good...I did just notice the mouth doesnt overlap like the RMWF

fisherwoman 08-12-2010 12:13 AM

My vote goes to the flathead chub minnow. Got tones in the old man river too.

pickrel pat 08-12-2010 01:18 AM

chub

caught tonnes of them in the peace river where the whitemud river runs in.

duffy4 08-12-2010 02:51 AM

I reckon its a Flathead chub.

All who said mountain whitefish had better look again.

WayneChristie 08-12-2010 07:07 AM

Not a whitefish

Troutfinger 08-12-2010 07:52 AM

Absolutely chub...

valve god 08-12-2010 10:11 AM

chub

Caught lots in Pembina and North Sask. rivers. Took one to F&W once and was told it was chub. Had big jack hit them when reeling in on rigs.:sign0161:

Brian_levesque 08-14-2010 10:18 AM

ciscoe or tulipe

ciscoe or tulipe. Not sure if I am right but we use to catch similar fish in ontario. Not sure about a tulipe though, maybe thats just what my dad called them?

209x50 08-14-2010 10:48 AM

chub.

pecker 08-14-2010 11:54 AM

cisco or herring :)

j3006 08-14-2010 11:58 AM

looks like a chub. Caught a few in the Peace River.

pickrel pat 08-14-2010 12:22 PM

........about a week or so after I caught my first ever mackeral. :innocent:

kodiakken 08-14-2010 08:05 PM

what is it?

It is a chubb.
Lots of them in the SSR and the Red Deer.

Ken.

pickrel pat 08-14-2010 09:00 PM

chub

many peaple confuse the chub and rockies... however if it is found in a river in the foothills and mountians... most likely a rocky.... ifits found in the prairies or a fair distance from the foothills.... most likely chub.... hope that helps.
