Rattled!!!

:D went to a couple old stands...mooose was at one no tag/draw...so made my way to second stand..
Had a set of rattling antlers hanging there ...so i thought what the heck and tinkled them for two minutes...

This 5x5 Whitey comes running in all pumped up ..5 yards from stand.stayed there for 15 mins looking for the fight...

Tall, just outside ears, bout 140PY...
Let him walk...

Point is Rattling...why not...its working!!!

Not a great phone pic

Nice, my cousin did a light rattle the other night with the same response, favourite time of year !!!!!!!!:sHa_shakeshout:

All I needed to hear.
Going to grab a decoy and head out first thing in the morning. I have a tree stand that is not in the ideal location, but close enough to a scrape and main trail from bedding area that rattling should work. I thought it would be at least another week, but good to hear they are coming in.

Any buck coming in is going to have a bad day. I'm not so fussy as you LOL!

That's awesome, Neil! Have had early rattling success in the past as well.

coyotekiller 10-17-2014 11:56 AM

Nice, going to have to try some rattling this weekend :)

ThreeD 10-17-2014 10:53 PM

Maybe next time.

Any particular sequence right now? Two mins straight? Had a tiny spiker this morning just from a 3 second tickle.

Bowhntr4life 10-18-2014 10:59 AM

Thanks Neil for the info and photo. Let the rattling begin!

Rattled and grunted a huge 5x5 this morning Hung up about 30 yds out for 5 min then lost interest and meandered out to 90 yds and hung around for about half an hour. Used rattle bag for about a minute at a lite/medium intensity and a minute later buck grunted about 10 times I could hear him coming after the grunts from about 100 yds out

Question for everyone... Does it matter if I use Muley antlers for calling whitetail? (Only have spiker whitetail antlers so far...)

Nope! That'll work just fine. By time they get close enough to see what kind of antler it is, they will be in a world of hurt!!

Anybody rattle in a mule deer?

HMG 10-19-2014 08:15 AM

Ive called muley's in with a grunt and bleat back in BC, but never rattled for them

Yes and it too works but not with the results you get from a whitetail. Bleat/light rattling will generate a mule deer buck to come it, gotta try it!

Do any of the commercial rattling systems work? I have no sheds as this is my first year out and I wasn't able to find any in the spring. Unless someone has a set they want to get rid of. Haha.

Rosenke01 10-19-2014 07:20 PM

Good to hear, cant wait to get out again next weekend

I have the Knight & Hale? rattling pack. It works well, at least it sounds that way I've only rattled in one buck last year. I'm also not an expert at rattling so maybe that's why I only rattled in one. lol Nice thing is that its nice and compact and easy to pack in my day pack, no actual horns hanging off my pack to accidentally bump and spook game.

laker 10-21-2014 09:35 AM

Young bucks are a hoot to rattle in and play around with, my experience with mature bucks though is they will always come up downwind and silently sneek away or leave with a blast. Grunting near a good scrape is my choice for the big ones.

L.O.S.T.Arrow 10-22-2014 09:09 AM

:D Rattled another good shooter whitey in last night...busted me in the act...he came quick...keep that first session short...I know better but what is a couple seconds more?...NOT better in this case...lol

A reminder for myself, but a good adventure...

We carry a lot of rattling bags, some brands are too small in my opinion...they are not as good as the real thing...but much better than not having the oppurtunity...

They are not as realistic and loud but have been proven to work

I start packing the horns with me on the first of October. Light sparring rattling will bring them in to see whats up in the hood. So far I have had 5 wt bucks of the younger variety come in. Lots of fun and good practice for later on.

fast_pass88 10-23-2014 09:12 PM

as far as rattleing in mulies, definitely yes! whether i have a tag or not, if i see a mule buck in nov, and he hasn't spotted me, i'll pull out the sheds just to see how he reacts. more often then not, they come in, wreck some sapplings and put on a good show. lots of times they'll come in all stiff legged, ears laid way back, ready kick some butt! but can't say i have the same luck with whiteys tho.
