You have sure seen a lot of snakes lately. Don't they start hibernating soon?

Hydro1 10-05-2014 07:15 PM

I have no idea where you are seeing all of these rattlers this time of year. Great shots!

they are just out sunning because its still warm here, once it stays cool they will stay underground for the winter.

It'll probably be January before I download mine. I suck at that part of photography.

Thanks for showing me your spot! Great to have one closer to home.

sure colored like a bull but its a young rattler, it was only maybe 13 or 14 inches, much different coloring than the bigger ones for sure. Im amazed I havent seen this many snakes before, Ive been in that area quite a few times, but I didnt know what to look for til I went herping with someone very experienced. I had realized garters bulls and rattlers all denned together, but the more bodies the warmer they will be over the winter. saw another of the colored striped garters on the highway on the way home but unfortunately it had been run over.

Five feet is about max for this species, which angled from Canada into Mexico.
It achieves its maximum lengths in Canada.

Could you help a novice out... found this bad boy and he has the same markings as your latest small rattlesnake , but I know he is not...measured just under 6 feet. Thanks

smith88 10-27-2014 09:31 AM
