Anyone planning west coast this summer ?

Is anyone going salmon fishing this summer ? If so who will you be using as your charter ? We lightened up on Christmas gifts this year 'cus we'll be dumping a bit of cash this summer.
The wife, son and I will be driving to Vancouver Island in August for the great salmon race, or so I call it, ha. We will be using 2 different fishing charters on the north part of the Island, AO sponsors of course, then one on the south end of the Island. The plan is to fish 2 days in Tofino fishing for all kinds, salmon, hailbut, cod, coho, then rush back to the inside to Port Hardy for another day on the water. We will Greyhound our Tofino catch back to relatives in Victoria between trips, then one day after Hardy, we jump on another charter out of Sooke for 2 days of fishing, so in all 3 charters, 5 days on the water and 1700 - 1800 km of driving, all within a week. We have a few days buffer to and from the Island, so not as hurried as it may seem, I say this now, ha. Been waiting on a trip like this for years, can't wait for August.

I'm jealous of ya Tbark! There is nothing like fishing on the ocean! We used to fish on both sides of the island. We never chartered, but used our own boats. You will have a blast!

We are going to try to head out to the island this summer, I doubt that we will fish (sigh). We will probably surf in tofino instead.

you will love fishing Sooke, used to live there when i was a kid and the fishing was awsome fishing the Sooke river, nothing like it, so cool watching 20-60 pound chinooks jumping and seeing nice 7 pound coho flashing there bellys, or catching some big chums with there hooked mouth really fun stuff, check out renfrew, another great spot for some monsters, even check the rivers around there for some steel, bring the bear spray.

drake 12-28-2011 09:15 PM

As usual, Ill be fishing with Leisure Suit Charters out of Port Mcneill. Just got back from a week of steel head fishing with them.....one word describes the winter action up there....outstanding!!!

We got married at that lodge and all of our meals were great. Loved our time there.

We had hoped to do some kayaking and possibly fishing but my hubby came down with a wicked cold. I guess we just need to come back:)

Let's get this back on track, where's everyone going? Doing it yourself or guided? What are ya targetting?!?!?

Sea Hawk 01-05-2012 05:43 PM

I am planning to pull my boat out to Prince Rupert this summer. I went out last august and had a blast with coho and caught a few halibut. It is a great challenge to do it yourself. My plan is to get out there earlier this summer and hopefully get in on some chinook action.

I'm heading out to the Kitimat River for some DIY fly fishing for chum! I've done 3 ocean trips to Rupert in the past and had a great time, would like to go back one day.

lucky fella, I will not make the coast this year.my trip will be to the hallowed waters of kootneay lake .home of the mighty gerard strain rainbows, and just happens to be a glorious side trip for any traveling by the crowsnest route .big spoons or large hair jigs will give u a shot at tackle busting bows and lunker bulls . take the 3a north from creston hit any creek mouth between there and nelson and hold on .closer to nelson creek mouths lend them selves to smaller tackle. good luck, safe miles to all

I am going back to Langara Fishing Lodge. I am hoping to best my 38.5 lb chinook, 14 lb coho and 138 lb halibut.

Since the water is colder I am not anticipating salmon shark fishing but I have hooked into 400 plus lbers...but not landed it yet. Need the right tackle and plan.

I am also collecting quality fish pictures so I want to add some rockfish I am missing.

Serengeti Charters 01-06-2012 09:41 PM

Which rockfish you missing sundance... and excited to get you on a ton of fish wildman :D

Looking forward to seeing you T-Bark. Getting pretty pumped up with all the Feeder Chinook in the area right now!! First boat goes in the water next week and that one won't come out until mid October so she will see some fish on the deck during the next 7 months:sHa_shakeshout:
Fresh Salmon on the grill next week...mmmmm....winter chinook....

John, you have to come out this summer and try out those bad boys!!!

Sea Hawk 02-23-2012 01:53 PM

I am planning to take my boat to Prince Rupert this summer. This will be my fourth trip and every time I go I come away with more questions. Here are a few and i would appreciate any help you can give.
How do you decide between herring or anchovie?
When you use herring, is it whole, cutplug or strip?
How do you decide on flasher or dodger?
How do you decide on flasher color?
How do you decide on leader length?
Do you use downrigger cable angle to judge trolling speed when the tide is running?
I probaby have 1000 questions where these came from so tell me when you get tired of answering.

Thanks
