Fishing tackle in Russia

I'm sitting in my hotel room in khanty Siberia and a Canadian worker I met on site is taking me to a fishing store tomorrow to do some shopping so stay tuned for the pics. Been here for 11 days so this is exciting. Had no time to shop around on my layovers in Germany or Moscow on the way here.

JohninAB 04-29-2013 12:57 PM

Definitely can not wait to see pics and prices on gear as well.

kostianych 04-29-2013 12:57 PM

don`t drink too much :)

Albertafisher 04-29-2013 01:43 PM

Hopefully you get to go fishing ;)

I'd be surprised if they carried more than a dozen spoons, anything more than a spool of neon blue monofilament and 3 sizes of hooks.

You could pedal a spool of power pro braid for $100 .......... if you could find one person who could afford it up there.

omega50 04-29-2013 02:26 PM

I thought the only tackle they used there was CIL Wigglers :)

The Fisherman Guy 04-29-2013 02:28 PM

You might find some of these:

I was surprised to only find these types of hooks in South America. One learns to become an expert tying Snell knots when using these hooks, as there is no eyelet.

kostianych 04-29-2013 02:35 PM

you should be prepared to be surprised.....

I don`t know about the OP report, but I`ve seen a lot of stuff in Russian stores you would be thinking about in your sweetest dreams.....

Japanese lines, hooks and rods, - is only one of the departments in a local store I went when I was in Almaty, KZ

and non of this chemical sh*** will work up there.....the fish is more smarter and natural then in our stocked ponds/lakes.......

Same all over

I fish with Russians , they have lots of stuff from behind the curtain

Their favourite Pike lure is the old Red & Red. They have some of the coolest snag hooks I have ever seen.

kostianych 04-29-2013 03:09 PM

easy...that was all we had in my childhood :))))

Make sure your fish is well cooked through. And don't listen to locals on how to cook it.
Look up "opisthorchis felineus" or "Siberian Liver Fluke".

fluxcore 04-30-2013 11:14 AM

Ill have no time for fishing over here unfortunately, we got tied up today so its tomorrow we get our driver to take us to a few places / fishing and hunting store. Camera is on the charger now lol. They actually eat frozen raw white fish here? Nasty. Well hittin the sac it's 11:00 at night here.

kostianych 04-30-2013 11:19 AM

frozen fish - is ok....called "stroganina" :) but make shure you drink vodka with this dish :))))

X2 this was my experience on my visits to the south Volga region.

Fluxcore,

Any updates and photos of what you found?

I wouldn't do it in Ob' river basin area, because of how prevalent this bug is there. You can't see it in the fish, hard to diagnose and even harder to cure. I think most people there have it without knowing that.

Other places - it's your choice and it can be tasty.
But the best fish I had (a lot one summer) is freshly salted arctic greyling (it can still move when you eat it). Beats every sushi I tried, but somehow grosses most foreigners out

No, I would not disparage Russian fishing equipment outright. Sure we have been blessed with capitalism for a long time and our stores overflow with excellent and varied products. BUT, some of the very best fishing equipment available on the planet comes from Russia and no where else. For example ice fishing jigs for small fish machined from pure tungsten and fitted with the best Japanese hooks. We don't have that here.

The spade end hooks shown below are common in Japan, Continental Europe, UK, Russia, etc. Maybe we are strange here for not using them.

Really looking forward to pictures.

I have used them here, used to be available getting hard to find now. Have some Gamakatsu spade end hooks. Better for very light line snells with very light weight small hooks &(big fish). Use at the vanity initially. Light small hooks and line break when snell gets pulled up against sharp hook eye.:). No eye on spade end hooks.:)

Ps big secret don't tell anyone.

honda450 05-02-2013 07:40 PM

Think Fluxcore got arrested by the KGB. Fishing secrets never leave Russia.

huntsfurfish 05-02-2013 07:42 PM

Send him a file.

Maybe he is 007:)
