What rods and reels do you have?

The recent discussion about 3wts got me curious about what setups people own? By the way, this is not a bragging board! Some people collect rods as a hobby and other don't.
I own loop opti creek 3wt, opti coast 6wt, opti switch 6wt, green line 7wt, xact 5wt, evotec 8wt. As well as a sage bass largemouth and echo solo 6wt Spey. Let's say I don't need anymore rods. Years of accumulation :)
My reels are loop opti speed runner and opti dryfly, loop clear reel, and an Amundson wind warrior Spey.

Let's hear what you guys have :)

rycoma 12-28-2015 11:35 AM

Echo carbon 3wt 7'6, echo solo 8wt 9', cabela's somethig or other 6 wt 9' combo, pieroway carboglass 6'6" 2 wt, 1952 J.S. sharpes "scotty" 6wt and a browning gold medilist 7'6" 4 wt. Have a couple of large arbor tfo reels. Redington rise in orange and a new redington zero clicker reel. Have had a few different rods over the years.

32-40win 12-28-2015 01:23 PM

3wt is a Sage discovery, use an old SA clicker drag on that.
5wts are 7ft 6" -10ft,TFO,Orvis,Fly Logic and Pieroway, all Ross disc drag reels.
6wts are Penn, Fly Logic, use reels for the 5 or 7wts on those
7wts are Orvis, Sage and Ross disc drag reels on those.
9 & 10wts are TFO, use SA disc drags on those. Also have an old Daiwa 9wt kicking around somewhere.
And I have one that is a combo, I think it is (may have that bass ackwards) of the bottom half of a VPX 5wt and the top half of an Orvis 7 wt., works surprisingly well with 5 wt lines.

2wt - TFO Pro Series US model 8ft 3pc w/sage 3200
3wt - TFO BVK 8ft 4pc w/sage 4200
4wt - Sage Vantage 9ft 4pc w/Reddington Rise
5wt - Sage Flight 9ft 4pc w/Reddington Rise
6wt - Sage TCX 9ft 4pc w/3Tend Reel
This is after 6 years of fly fishing in Alberta and BC.
I am happy with what I have now and maybe a spey rod for next year :)

rycoma 12-28-2015 05:28 PM

Seeing this make me glad. My wife thinks I'm crazy for owning as many rods as I do. Either I'm not crazy or we all are on here.😂

I think for some (including me) collecting rods is a hobby. I really enjoy having a few rods to choose from for my fishing trips, or even just going into to the field and casting :p

jeprli 01-02-2016 08:45 AM

Not picky about reels, but I do enjoy choices I made with fly rods. Couple more fiberglass and I will be set for some time. Last time I bought a rod was 4 years ago.

Moefoe 01-02-2016 12:19 PM

Gord over at Westwinds used to love seeing my truck pull up back in the early 2000's because I always seemed to walk out with a new or demo Thomas & Thomas...I've sold a few so now only have 6 of them, 3-10 wts all Horizon series matched with Galvin reels in the smaller wts and Nautilus in the big saltwater rigs! Two other Rods that I use a lot is a 4wt 8' 6" Cabela's LSi, it's frickin amazing and so cheap. The other is a 5 wt 9' Hardy Zenith hand cannon that I stole from a guy for $200 in Idaho, it had a busted tip and he couldn't be bothered to fix it...Galvin Reels on both!!

My stuff was used to fish dinosaurs. Ocean city reels from the 50's, a 3 pc 8 wt 8'6" glass rod from the 50's . a couple 2 piece 8 wt 8'6" glass rods from the 60's and my new rod , a Fenwick 8wt 8'6" carbon from the early 80's.
Those old reels are still as good as new.
I just picked up a newer 7 wt, 4pc graphite, 9' Temple Fork Outfitter Profesional series II that is still in the mail.

I wish I still had my first fly rod, it was a wood rod made with greenheart, 8 wt, 2 piece. The sections were joined on a diagonal slash ,each section had a short ferrule about 1/2" long .The diagonal was about 3" long, and taped with black elect tape instead of the modern type ferrules. My father made that one, and taught me how to make a new tip when I broke it. It finaly broke beyond repair. After that one I used a 3 pc bamboo rod for a few years. It had 2 tips, 1 for flies, and one for baits. It finaly died too, but the reels are still going strong.

If I could find some greenheart I would make a replacement for my long gone first fly rod.

Try this place bamboorods.com out. It's run by a man out of Rocky Mountain house who has been building bamboo rods for decades. He has and may still have greenheart rods for sale in his used rod section.

For years my Sage Fli 5wt did me just fine.

Then for a trip to Mexico and a little bone fishing a couple years ago I picked up an 8wt Greys FX2 Salt, justifying that I could also use it for pike here. Never have.

Broke my 5wt this year. Did finally get it fixed by Sage, but decided to buy a 6wt TFO BVK partially as a back-up to the 5wt, and partially for fishing larger streamers in the Bow, etc. We shall see if I actually do it.

I don't see any reason why I should need more rods than that now. 90% of my fishing is just plunking around streams and small rivers south of Calgary like the Sheep and Highwood, and maybe the bow or a small lake once in a while.

Try out a 7 1/2 ' 3 wt for small drys on those streams and you will end up buying one on that end of the scale.
