What all do you plan on using it for. I have always been a Leupold fan, but also have nikon, zeiss, Huskemaw, vortex, Bushnell and weaver. For a hunting rifle you don't need anything bigger than a 3-9 x40.

Dark Wing 03-02-2014 02:15 PM

I put leupold vx3 3x9-40 on my tikka with talley rings. I choose it over the zeiss because it was a little lighter. Had it at the range at last light a month ago with another rifle that had a 6 yr. old zeiss on it and noticed that the leupy was a lot brighter than the zeiss.

yea my father has a vx3 on his 7mm and he loves it built in laser and all but that scope is way out of my price range for a coyote rifle but all around beautiful scope and its fantastic quality and brightness and could it be where the ziess is older ?

So exactly which model of the VX3 has a built in laser? I also have never seen a VX3 3-9X40, and they don't list either on their web site.

Yup could very well be, the ziess was used hard since 08 and may have lost some brightness. Had it on all my sheephunts and also out 3 weeks straight every Nov.. I probably would have bought another one but the leupold was a little lighter than the zeiss.

yea most likely. i was supposed to get a leaupold for my 270 but decided to get a proper coyote gun instead of my 17hmr witch shot a wolf with it last summer

kayaker 03-02-2014 02:44 PM

I think the nicest all round, general big game hunting scope I have used is the Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36. Its got a very useful magnification range, is compact, its very tough, has good quality glass/coatings, has good eye relief, can be mounted low and is not too pricey.

I prefer a smaller sized scope for a 'working' hunting rifle though. I am not a fan of the trend towards huge objectives that require high mounts, with big inch high turrets that stick out like a sore thumb. Just my preference.

unclebuck 03-02-2014 02:45 PM

Zeiss HD5 3x15!!! Best glass for my particular vision.

Perhaps you are referring to an illuminated reticle, rather than a built in laser?:)

i was looking at those too but those are too expensive. so i was lookin at the terra. The scope is only for a coyote rifle

Nikon monarchs are some of the better scopes on the market, there is one in buy/sell 3-12x42 sf nikoplex for $400

Excellent scopes for the price, I bought a 3-12x42SF for $400, and a 5-20X44SF for $500 both new. I use mostly Conquests or HD-5s on most of my rifles, including my varmint guns, but I did mount Monarchs on a couple of lower priced range guns. I use Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44 scopes on my big game rifles, but the cost is considerably higher.

Rockjockey 03-02-2014 04:22 PM

I have one of these on my 204 and it seems to work nicely. My good buddy has one on his 223 and likes it as well. Hawke Sport Optics Sidewinder 30 4-16x50 SF Riflescope, SR6 reticle. It has an illuminated reticle (red or green). You would be looking at around 450 - 500 bones with rings.
I would not put it on my 375H&H (although the company says it will work) but for the low recoil of the varmint guns it is fine.
Got it at Kodiak Lake in Barrhead.

Big Racks 03-02-2014 07:22 PM

I've gone to pretty much straight Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14's and Elite 6500 2.5-16's. I don't mind the weight and they seem to shoulder well for me. I tried the VX-3's a couple of times but always sold them. Great optics but I just found they didn't "fit" me well. Not sure if it is eye relief or what, but I had a heck of a time finding the sweet spot when at higher magnifications. The black curtains would open and close in a tiny little spot and I was forever moving my eye back and forth trying to get a complete view.

Honestly, if money is an issue, it is really really hard to beat a used Elite 3200 in bang for your buck. I preferred 4-12x40's personally as they are incredibly versatile. Awesome value if your funds are limited. Used 4-12x40 will set you back around $250 if you keep your eyes open.

north american hunter 03-02-2014 07:28 PM

Check these links out, they ship to canada for about $30-$40.

I have a Leupold VXII 4-12x40AO with LRD duplex on my Sako m75ss 243. This is my predator rifle till my boys get older. LOVE THIS scope !!

All my rifles have Leupold scope, starting a few years back (1997) with Var-X III's, a couple VXIII's and VXII's and last couple rifles have the new VX3 scopes.

Dick your real name? or is it just how you act?

fishcop669 03-02-2014 11:12 PM

Scopes

My coyote gun has a VX3 6.5-20x50 with a varmint reticle and has been a very dependable scope for about $1000.00. Also around a thousand is the Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 MC, which has better glass (IMO) and is on my .30-06. Vortex seems to have good glass as well but are a little cheaper.
