Is a 4 stroke 20 to big for a kicker
 

I have a 16ft Lund pro angler console boat, would a 20 be too big for a kicker

I think so. No more than a 10. A 6hp is plenty why spend the extra money

I have that motor on a 14ft boat. Even back trolling it is fairly fast. At it's slowest speed going backwards it is perfect for plugs and dragging blades. For finesse stuff it is to fast.

It’s not ideal but if you already own it you can make it work. I always carry 2 trolling bags with harnesses in my boat. That way I have options no matter the conditions or which motor I want to run. Throw out a bag or 2 and your golden. When I was broke even the old 5 gallon pail with a hole in the bottom on a rope did the trick.

Depends a lot on what your main type of fishing is, if you troll cranks a lot for walleye or say fish for lake trout a 20 hp will probably do just fine. Get a couple drift socks of various sizes if its on the quick side. Like the last post mentioned its maybe not the ideal size for your boat but it'll work if you own one already.

How big is your main engine? To me a 20 would be overkill unless you have no choice. Could be a lot of weight on your transom. I have an 8 on my 17ft Sylvan and it does an awesome job in some good wind and waves

Way more than what is needed. Weight wise though some 20’s are not that much more weight than a fully dressed 9.9hp.

Short answer, yes it would be too big.

It's not too big if it was your only motor.

I had a 20HP on my 14' tub and getting 3 guys upstream in the NSR it was just right.

Generally speaking it's better to have more than you think you will need and not have to use it then to need it and not have it, that's what a throttle is for.

But as a secondary motor it's a bit much, but if the price is rite I'd still do it.

If you do pass on it I know someone in the market for a 20 if it's a good deal?

I think we have a 25hp on our 29' Striper salmon boat for trolling...

I have a Lund 1850 Tyee with a 175 Verado on it and then a 10 h pro-kicker. Trolling speeds are fine, but the weight of the two motors makes the back of the boat a bit heavy if I have adults in the back jump seats. It takes a bit to get up on plain, I think a 20 h would make it even worse for that.

Lol I have a 8hp on my 26' striper. Unless you are trying to get up on plane you are using 3- 4x what you need.

Nope, our boat is in Masset on HG/QCI. Better to have extra power for big waves, wind and or tides when fighting a big fish.

Yes something like 10 kg depending on brand. You can sure low-idle the 20, but nice to have more if you need it as others mentioned. If he likes the price, he still can trade down later.

I have a similar sized crestliner (although a tiller) and wouldn't dream of putting a 20hp kicker on the back of it but that's just me. Doesn't make sense to put all the extra weight and strain on the transom when you could get away with a lot less motor.
