late winter pike fishing

gunna go fishing this upcoming family day and i had no luck lately for pike and i usually use smelts or minnows with a spoon and set it off the bottom about 7-8 inches to a foot in early to mid winter and i fish about 15-20 feet deep around rock beds, sand bars near points and bays. but lately this month ive been lucking out is there a change in depth and set up used (jigs) and also is 7-8 or a foot too shallow now?

If the lake bottom has big rocks, a foot might not be enough to have your hook off bottom as your hook & bait might be out of sight for cruising pike. If your fishing 15-20 feet, I'd have the hook up maybe 2 1/2 to 3 feet that way it would be visible from a further distance. On sand bottom you can be set close to bottom or even laying on the bottom as pike are known scavengers.
The bigger the bait catches the bigger fish. A 10 or 12 inch smelt or sardine is about right.

Give it a try, it'll only be helpful if it helps you catch more fish.

late winter pike fishing

Yesterday I started catching pike with a pink and white lipless crank bait. No bait. They arm to be really aggressive the last few days.

A few weeks ago there was no way that was happening, it had to be a baited hook with very little movement. Otherwise they would spook or just carry on.

This is at lac ste Anne...

Did pretty good at graham last week. We didn't catch a whole bunch but they were big. Biggest was 26

I never fish more than ten feet deep when I am targeting pike.

I was fishing last weekend at Gull and the guy next to us pulled out 3 keeper pikes in 5 ft of water a foot off the bottom using quick strikes and anchovies. I don't think shallow water is an issue at all
