Food prices again

I have a buddy that owns several restaurants that JUST told me he is being told of a 40% spike in grocery prices coming. If you dont have overpriced meat in the freezer today it may be time to get some before it's really crazy.
I'm going to listen to him, he has multiple x what I will ever have in the bank

Hoarding....exactly what drives the price up!

The Cook 05-26-2020 03:48 PM

I'm hoarding Rum and beer, oh and some gin because nothing says summer like a tall ice cold gin and tonic with a slice of lime. Just in case there is a run on the liquor store.

No really😀. I wasn’t serious. Only thing I buy lots of is the pepper bacon at Sobeys. Good stuff but hard to get

Sooner 05-26-2020 04:38 PM

Crazy how the economy can tank costing us more one way or the other and food prices go up and up. Double whammy.

Okay....sorry about that.
And you’re right.... that pepper bacon is addictive!!

Off in the Bushes 05-26-2020 05:20 PM

Tell me more about this peppered bacon 🤤

liar 05-26-2020 05:34 PM

did your buddy give any specific reason for this ? Is it just the result of the whole world going to crap ?

liar 05-26-2020 05:37 PM

We dont have a sobeys up here but the local butcher makes the peppered bacon and yeah , its pretty good . Not sure why but just peppering the heck out of regular bacon is just not the same .

So you’re the guy I’m competing with. 😄. It is great bacon. I think you should maybe cut back on your consumption for a bit. I’ll take up the slack.

Talking to him today, he is in rough shape with all employees standing at hot grills paying rent for empty restaurants. He said the bad news just keeps on coming. I believe this man.

pikeman06 05-26-2020 06:38 PM

Free walleyes in sylvan this summer. Gobble gobble.😉

roper1 05-26-2020 08:08 PM

Buddy sees different market signals than I do. Packing plants North America wide; Pork, chicken, beef, re-opening with staff back to work.

Fruit & vegetable farmers Canada & US able to source farm workers.

Large supply of cattle, hogs, broilers, milk & dairy products.

Fuel supply large & cheap for transport.

Wholesalers & retailers have taught consumers how much to pay today, so I don't see much decrease unless the recession is deeper than predicted.

Any increase, much less 40%, seems a stretch today.

Grizzly Adams 05-26-2020 08:10 PM

Gotta wonder, who's harvesting all those fruits and vegetables we usually get from California, Florida and Mexico ? It's gotta be done, or else. That's going to drive prices up.

Grizz

I was the person that had the thread up about grocery prices going up 40% already because I have a set list of items for my Elderly Mom That is usually $100 but this last time was up to $140. So,,, I believe it.

spurly 05-26-2020 09:34 PM

Meat

Beef prices, at Lethbridge Costco were ridiculous yesterday.

Wisest advice on the thread.

Eat less and drink more. Save money. And prevent scurvy with the lime.:sHa_shakeshout:

pikergolf 05-27-2020 07:57 AM

co op has some great prices on pork this coming week.

jeprli 05-27-2020 08:14 AM

Just received 2 skids of european imports, price is still the same as it was 6 months ago, date of production february and march. There will be increase but no one is sure what it actually will be, so far suppliers are being fair.

buckbrush 05-27-2020 08:17 AM

Why have people who buy extra when sales are on or prices are lower now labeled hoarders?

Lots of things can contribute to increase in food prices. Fuel prices, carbon taxes, forced increase in employee wages, a hot shot CEO trying to increase profit, disruptions in supply (even at a feed, fertilizer or seed level) ect.

I was raised to always have extra of everything on hand because that’s how my parents were raised. (I also hate making trips to town).

Do we also consider people who try to buy stocks right before the prices go up ,hoarders?

pa_of_6 05-27-2020 08:20 AM

I ranch and can tell you that NONE of the price increase is trickling down to the ranch

In fact the cattle prices have gone down
