Many of the varmints around here and with the heat coming on I'm betting they are gonna be a [female canine]. Gonna keep the squeamish outta the bush.:scared0015:

A nasty looking one that's for sure..

3rd season here, not as bad as the first one, had no leaves at all, green grass with winter trees:(

House was covered in them, raid, and then snow shovel and throw them in the bush...what a stink too.....

No idea what spider that is, but I'd be scared it's gonna grow to the size of a cow with all the food available to it.
Great pic.

Looks like a type of jewel spider. Completely harmless...unless you're a caterpillar

Big Grey Wolf 05-22-2018 07:59 AM

Guys, what areas in province are you noticing the caterpillar infestations? A couple years back quite heavy along highway 22 between Rocky and Drayton Valley.

uhg...i remember the infestations growing up in Manitoba. It's funny, it seemed like nothing back then, but now they give me the heeby jeebys. Especially when there are that many of them.

My grandpa told me a story about them de railing a train up north because there were so many on the track, the "grease" from all the worms getting run over caused the train to jump the track.
This was up north of Swan River somewhere.

A few years ago during our infestation in peace river the train couldn't climb the hills leaving town they would spin out

Looks like a hungry tic to me.

What do people use to spray them these days? I have not had a bad infestation for about 30 years but have seen a few more this year.

I think the plague around North western Alberta is finally over. But it lasted about 5 years! Most of the poplar trees are dead now. Those things are worse than the pine beetles!

Ya three years cycle my arse!

buckbrush 05-25-2018 06:56 PM

Just noticed my trees are covered in them. Do they kill all the trees? Do you have to get a plane to spray them or how do you get rid of these things? If all my trees die its gonna be pretty windy here.

buckbrush 05-25-2018 07:17 PM

I don't even know what I have. All the leaves are rolled up and inside every one is a little inch worm looking thing. Anyone know what these could be?

prarie_boy1 05-25-2018 07:38 PM

If you can get your neighbors together and there is an aerial applicator in the area get them to spray some BT over your yard should take care of things and is non toxic to humans.

I can remember some of the infestations in Peace River in the 70's. They had to close Springfield Elementary because the caterpillars were piled up 2' to 3' deep along the outside walls and were getting into the ventilation systems. We'd go out dirtbiking and be covered with them. If you sat and listened, you could hear them eating.

if you have tent caterpillars trees will be fine .

Used to spray Dipel for them when I worked for a City in sask. They eat the sprayed leaves and basically get an ulcer and burst.

Seen more than one major infestation. Usually 7 year cycles. Most, but not all of the trees survive.
