Cold Lake

1 Attachment(s)
Well might as well start a thread on this beauty of a lake.

Went out yesterday in French Bay....48 fish caught in 2hrs....was having so much fun catching the pike never even targeted the eyes.

Was on the hunt for a big girl but only managed two over 35"....but it was a blast...wife used a Len Thompson dimple series candy cane which caught the majority and I stuck to the 5 of diamonds 00.....

Today will be in long bay searching for eyes.....but man were the bay's busy....

Yes I've been fishing that Lake for lots of years also and I've seen its decline as far as lake trout size I just think all these internet posts and videos it just doesn't help the Lakes, anyway have a good day fishing wish I was out there

Aaaand now the inevitable question..... was the provincial park boat launch open?! Thx

thorne 05-17-2020 01:45 PM

Provincial launch is good to go, set out from there this morning. Currently in the N.E corner hammering the Lakers! They are deep for this time of year...hooking up at 80-100'

so how did people make out? back bays for eyes??? what was hot....jig head and a minnow? shhhh:scared0015:

thorne 05-18-2020 04:48 PM

No eyes for us....did a bit of jigging for them in French bay just off the creek on the East side....but nothing...lots of fish on sonar, so just to see I threw on a tube jig...and yep....Lakers....lots of Lakers...so I just rolled with that ...LOL. tried drift jigging on the north end at the river outlet...no bites there either...but fishing in a good N.E. wind goes against all fishing wisdom..but a guys gotta try! Hooked into lots of lakers at the usual locations. 80-100'...odd for a surface temp of 3.5 deg, but what ever...if thats where they wanna be, then that's where I'll fish em!

Awesome stuff cant wait to get out and hopefully get on that walleye bite again...

wildalberta 05-18-2020 07:56 PM

Yes most lakers we caught were right off bottom 80-105 foot. Thought that was a bit off. Mostly trolling we tried and a couple jigging.

I can’t wait to make my way out there, waiting on parts for my motor. I’ve got a dozen projects on the go right now, but with the grass turning green, leaves starting to pop out, my mind is shifting to fishing.

looks like the camp gounds is booked about 90 % for the first week of june.
10 stalls are still open ,its going to be a busy week. i will be there .

58thecat 05-19-2020 07:06 AM

Weather this week is rainy but I will get out in between the wet fronts to see what's happening in the back bays for eyes....loads of pike that are active....talk to a group in a boat as I was bringing a fish in and they asked what we were using as we hammered them....candy cane dimple series and 5 of diamonds 00...they were using rapella's etc but I told them come times it's the Color as the water was a bit murky.....tight lines folks.

58thecat 05-25-2020 05:58 AM

Was out yesterday....all I can say is ohhhhh boy:sHa_shakeshout:

Ken07AOVette 05-25-2020 09:35 PM

I am thinking of going out this week, was not sure if the ice was off or not.

Nice to see some reports coming in.

58thecat 05-26-2020 05:55 AM

this was hot....as indicated by the marks...it works...all species of fish in cold lake like it....might just have to change sizes to target different species...but it works very well.

Len Thompson dimple series came through again....:sHa_shakeshout:

Attachment 164338

really windy today:(

Huzza 06-01-2020 04:23 PM

eye

was out saturday, only caught 1 laker and couple of jacks, no eyes. you talking about the bay south of the sand bar?

35 whelen 06-01-2020 06:56 PM

Just look on the map then look where the bays are where the rivers run in and out of a lake the spawning always takes place in the rivers or close to it and then work your way backwards from those areas

yup...just be careful the sand bar shifts and various in depth....watched a fella just a going and then came to a stop within 20 yards abruptly and another boat just pushing up sand with his engine fully tilted...and yes there is a few large boulders if sands not bad enough the boulders will make short notice of your lower leg/prop.

good luck.

thorne 06-02-2020 11:24 AM

Ya, thats just a part of the lake I just dont go...What is the average depth across that sandy beast anyway??

but there are areas that are deeper towards the east seen many big boats take that area no problems....one year we just got out and pushed the boat over the sand bar...oh and once the weeds establish themselves the perch hang out in there too...just another fun fish to catch if the others are not cooperating.:)
