Geese migration updates
Well, the season starts in about a week, and thought a migration thread would be helpful to all. Live around Edmonton, peas are coming off, wheat should be another week or two. Pretty warm , lots of ducks, but geese are scarce—too warm still I’m guessing. How about you guys up north?
Sure itching to get out there! |
In McMurray loads of Dark geese Flying South today and over the last week trigger fingers is getting itchy hoping to get opening day with my daughter around Athabasca.
|
Like a switch flipped today in central AB. Family groups of geese pouring on to the river.
|
Geese just started moving south around Yellowknife. Looking like an early fall
|
Worked all day adding to my decoy spread. I don’t bother going out till October. Should be ready by then.
|
Saw a decent flock of about 50 or so south of Edmonton in a fresh cut wheat field, couple of small families too. The wet weather this week sure wont help anyone get their crops off, have a feeling might be fishing on opening day.....
|
I got a hunted locked down for opening morning anyone west of Athabasca wanna join my daughter and I.
|
Seen a few decent flicks in a few fields out by Devon/calmar on sunday! Can’t wait!
|
Still early yet.

Same field as your second shoot last year? Cat |
Lots of birds flying around the last couple days
|
Was spotting tonight and found 3 shoots. Found a big blob of specks headed out to feed as well but left them alone for another week or 2 till I get serious
|
Looking forward to the opener. Mostly local geese in my area, but the ducks are pooling in on the bigwater.
|
So far in our scouting travels we have found 4 big huntable flocks of geese one of em which had a few hundred ducks in it. The only catch is 3 of em are roosting 200 yards away and the 4th is no hunting :angry3:

That sounds about like situation normal. My biggest issue is waiting for crops to come off to get to flyways between ponds in early Sept. Seems to me the good spot will be in canola this year. Some of the secondaries will be in barley, could be cutting some of those already. Not sure what we are doing this weekend, scouting or shooting or what, there was talk of heading to Wainwright, we shall see. I have a suspicion that low water on the major roosts could be an issue this year in our area. Find out when I get there, see what is around and what they are doing.

Half hour til sunset and I've been scouring the area I had success at last year and have yet to see or even hear a goose or a duck. 😥
|
Early season you have to have a 6th sense....not everybody has it. Guys like NUBE do....
|
Most of my regular area is not harvested yet , but I'm pretty sure astepanuk has a hot shoot all set and he is close to home too!:)

Well, the combines were running like mad yesterday, lots of crops coming off, mainly peas (which is fine by me!) . Tons more birds showing up, looking better every day.
|
The snows showed up in our area yesterday, but with so little combined, the amount of feeding areas is still very limited. The combines were going hard this morning.

Friend was spotting tonite, spotted at least 3 shoots on specks, lots of birds around, few snows in with them, 3-400 he said. Oodles of ducks, some areas have more water than last yr, one has more than the last 3 yrs. 90% of the peas were done last weekend when I looked, lots of barley in swaths and being swathed.
So, I'll just stay up all nite tonite, leaving shortly to meet the boys about 5;00am, see if we can kill a few specks. It's warm, no wind, and not much for cloud, but, it is in a barley field. Dog's been carrying his pheasant dummy around all nite and whining at me, every time I get up, he thinks it is time to go. Of course I had to give him a couple of shots on the speck call before taking the guns out of the safe. That may have something to do with his being a bit wired. |
I saw a group of about the same amount of snows just east of edmonton early yesterday morning. Wonder if it’s the same ones. The Canada flocks out here seem to be gathering strength by the day, but mainly lots of scattered smaller ones and the occasional group of maybe 40-70 strong.

geese
Quite surprised seeing very large flocks in 100's way up high winging it south, not going feeding. I think they got their tows frozen in Peace Country and headed for some warm weather in the far south.
Still lots of local geese though west of Edmonton. |
Just finished usual 3 hr scouting drive. So quiet, lots more fields coming off daily. So few birds though, this time last year they were everywhere.
Whole section of peas just came off, zilch. I did get to sit, have a coffee and watch about 15 hawks dive bombing silage for mice, never seen so many in one place. Beautiful birds, sure interesting to watch. |
Saw 5 shoots between Edmonton and westlock yesterday....no lack of birds north west of edmonton. Lots of flocks off in the distance too

Went hunting today east of Edmonton, lots of birds there! Tons of Snow geese! And huge waves of migratory birds were rolling in, the skies were turning black and white! Got a few nice spekies and lesser Canada’s with few whites. Was a great day out!
