Tikka T3x 3006
 

Just purchased myself a new tikka T3X 3006, what yards do you use run your sight at generally? Running 180g bullets, curious what others are doing. Also do you guys reccomend just buying your accessories straight from tikka or is there a good website to use?

If you are a normal hunter, not a long range commando like so many seem to be these days, zero your gun at two hundred and go hunting. Good luck. Shoot at 100 and 300 and you are money.

I agree with SNS. That's how I have my 30-06 set up as well.

Most of my shots are inside of 200 yards which means it'll hit right on the cross hairs or a tiny bit high. I don't adjust for it. Anything out to about 300 yards should be about 6 to 8 inches low. If you're aiming behind the shoulder or somewhere very close to that you'll still be in the vitals or very near even if you're cross hairs are set to behind the shoulder. I aim at just below spine for longer shots and never had a problem.

All depends on conditions and bullet too of course. This is assuming factory ammo and ideal conditions.

May not be relevant but my Sako (same parent company and some claim the same barrels) is not especially fond of 180s and will only shoot a couple of types around an inch after a bunch of tinkering. It loves 165s and will shoot acceptable groups with most anything you stuff in it. It especially likes a fast boat tail like found in Superformance both the SSTs and GMX. It also shoots Hornady Interlock very well.

Anyway, I ended up wasting a fair amount of time and money trying to stuff a square peg in a round hole hoping I could get great results from 180s. With all the different bullets available there may be one in 165 or other that will shoot better, get the job done and get it done more efficiently than the 180s. You will most likely get a little flatter trajectory and less felt recoil as an added bonus.

I set my zero at 200 yards as well.

My son just bought one in 30-06 and it is a 1/2" or better shooter.I loaded 150gr TTSX with 51gr of IMR 4895 seated 3.322" to fit the mag well with a little room.Chronied at 2949fps.The 165 Cor Lok's went in the same hole using 58gr/IMR 4831 not chronied.The 150's were sighted 2" high at 100 yards and centered the bullseye at 200 yards. I like the ergonomics of the new T3X a little better than the T3.

My 3006 shoot really well with Barnes TTSX 168 gr. Zero at 100 or 200 as you like

Now sighting in at 100 with my BDC retrical scope.

Those optics are a game changer.

sighting in at 24 yards, gives me a shooting range of 50-300 yards with no holding over.
Of course this is not taking angles in consideration, and I always chrono my rounds since I hand load, factory loads gives you velocity on the box so it is easy to plug in those numbers in a ballistic calculator, free online btw.
But everyone is different its what works for you, I have a simple schmidt and bender scope so that makes it simple for me.

Plugging in the advertised velocity into a ballistic app is just asking for a miss. Garbage data in garbage data out. I recently bought a box of nosler 270wsm 140 gr accubonds with an advertised velocity of 3100 fps. I bought this ammo to break in the barrel on a new 270wsm. I ran it across my magnetospeed and chrony. I got 2865 and 2840.

Well for me anyway, your mile may vary of course.
Since I hand load my rounds very carefully of course, I first chrono my cartridges, sight my rifle in at given range then go to shooterscalculator.com site and plug in the numbers, altitude weather etc., once I get a ballistic chart of where my rounds will hit at given distance I go back to the range and verify.
I carefully check my hits up to 300 yards, cause that is my max comfortable hunting range and make notes, having all that information gives me the confidence in my rifle and my ability to hunt up to but no further than 300 yards.
My whitetail this year was taken at a 6% angle according to my range finder at 210 yards, knowing that my rounds hit +/- 2.3" high with my loads I needed no adjustment shooting down on my deer, critter laid down in 10 seconds and expired, was very thankful to the deer gods of course.
But like any system, every one has one it is what works for the individual, some sight in at 100 and use a bdc turret or reticle, my schmidt is a simple 8x scope with a duplex reticle so no playing around with turret or bdc hold over, but then again it depends where you hunt; woods open field all that makes a difference in my approach.

Last year I decided to put a nice scope on my Remington 3006. It was like my 80 year old grandma getting a boob job.
I wear glasses and I couldn't find anything in that scope for the life of me.
This year I bit the bullet and traded in on a Tikka T3 Lite.
I went old school and had a Williams peep sight mounted on it. No problem locating what I need to shoot.

That's funny. Did you take the lens covers off?

I sight in 3" high at a hundred. The bullet being 3.5" above my line of sight at 150 yards doesn't bother me but it dropping an extra few inches at 350-400 yards does.

I usually run 165 accubonds so here's the difference between a 200 yard and a 270 yard zero.

The peep sight doesn't need covers.

Tikka is a great rifle.. good choice!
