Camping Trip West of Sundre - Pic Heavy - Had a great time!
Well, just spent 5 days out in the west country near Bearberry west of Sundre.
We spent a few days just chilling at our beauty campsite where we had permission from a rancher to park on his property. And use the wood burning sauna. Great folks, super friendly, and they rent out cabins on their property as well. PM me if you’d like the info! We are going to make plans to rent a cabin this winter with another couple, just a treat to be out there. We went up the Forestry Trunk road, hiked along Limestone Mountain to the Fire Lookout and had a nice visit with the lady up there. Her biggest beef was all the quadders that go past the fence and quad right up to the tower. She said she didn’t get many hikers, so it was a nice change for her. We picked a great day to go, with the weather being perfect. We were the only people up there and hardly saw anyone all day. We did a few other hikes in the area exploring some cutlines and looking to see what we could see. We were going to go up to peppers lake, and down to the Ya Ha Tinda, but we felt lazy and just sat around the campfire instead. Felt great to be recharged. We went a ways down into Limestone creek and did a bit of plinking while there. I wish I had remembered my fishing lures (they were at home) as there were some nice looking trout in one of the creeks we found. I did buy some lures in Sundre the next day, and fished the James River one evening to be nailed with a pretty wild thunder and hailstorm. No pics of that event as it took my wife and I about 35 minutes through the hail to hike back to camp, drenched totally. Anyhow, it was a great trip, very quiet, relaxing, and a bit of exercise thrown in. Here’s a bunch of pics. Tons of deer, only saw Does, Mulie and Whitetails http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6264Large.jpg Flowers were in full bloom http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6258Large.jpg Sauna! http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...104Large-1.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6287Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6286Large.jpg Duke the City Dog contemplating the wildlife. This shaggy beast knew how to crawl under the fence and would come visit us every evening since we had the nicer grass on our side. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6151Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...144Large-1.jpg |
Here’s some pics of our campsite. Couldn’t have had a nicer spot.

MEAT http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...135Large-1.jpg One of the cabins they rent out… http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...131Large-1.jpg The Biathalon range http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...102Large-1.jpg |
Duke wanting to play fetch …. AGAIN
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...100Large-1.jpg Sweet blister, a culmination of a few weekends of recent hiking. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6230Large.jpg Deer coming to see us target shooting http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6224Large.jpg My wife is a pretty decent shot actually http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6220Large.jpg Limestone Creek http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6215Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6214Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6213Large.jpg Didn’t go much farther than the bridge as up the hill there was a big sign for a 22% grade hill which looked interesting, but it said that all vehicles needed to have radios past this point. So, since I didn’t have a radio, I figured I didn’t want to tick off some shell employee…. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6212Large.jpg |
So for the Limestone lookout trail, the last km or so to the radio towers is pretty rough driving but the F150 made it… albeit slowly
Kinda neat to drive above treeline before the hike starts. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6167Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6169Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6174Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6175Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6209Large.jpg Curious Marmot http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6179Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6177Large.jpg You could see Moose Moutain to the south, to the North past Ram falls to the Cline River fire lookout. Miles and miles! http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6198Large.jpg http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r..._6197Large.jpg |

Awesome AWESOME trip report Diver!! Excellent pics too! And in their full glory too. Nice. I love seeing other areas like that. I was wondering if a guy could bring a trailer up there and then saw your pic. Cool! We have that same BBQ....is yours new?? Cuz ours looks NOTHING like that now! lol.
Nice touch with the google earth screenshots too! Class.....THAT is how to do a trip report!! Thank you, Sir. http://www.threadbombing.com/data/me...11279339c0.gif |

Ours looks rather greasy now too, nothing a sandblasting can't fix! There are a TON of places to go random camping out that way, so you have lots of options. We did most of our exploring on the trunk road during the week when it was fairly quiet. Yesterday and today we stayed close to camp. |
A few more pics....
I found a few treestands, and I'm sure I'm on someone's trailcams more than once. A few on crown land off property, and one treestand I found on property that I think belongs to a really nice guy we met who has a new three month old puppy. Didn't want to interrupt his privacy too much and go bug him about hunting spots. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/IMG_6261.jpg sunset one evening. The last few days we got a lot of rain, but hey, a day camping is much better than being at work. We watched a couple of movies in the trailer, and during a few good downpours, I just sat under the awning with a rum and enjoyed nature's show. If you can stay somewhat dry, the rain and thunder is quite entertaining! I wasn't having much fun during the hailstorm, because I was worried about my wife and dog, but I found the main trail after some bushwacking and we got home safe. Drenched, but safe. I was starting to get pretty worried about lightning as we were on the fringes of tall trees and meadows. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/IMG_6248.jpg A map of the area we were trouncing around in... lots of people out there but everyone we ran into were pretty decent. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...010/img001.jpg Another view of our campsite http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/IMG_6275.jpg And our provincial flower.. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/IMG_6271.jpg |
Looks like you had a great camping trip ABD.
I use to spend a ton of time in that Limestone country. Sadley these days there just is never enough days in the week. |
Very nice thread....thanks!

Wow, looks like fun ;)
Been stuck sorta close to home myself this summer since we're expecting our son to be born any day now (and have been expecting "any day now" for about 3 weeks) Those pics make me want to get out there for sure.... thanks for posting! |

thanks for sharing.. g73 |
How did the Clearwater River, and other streams and rivers you crossed look like?
Were they still pretty high and dirty? This has been sort of a wet summer. |
Very nice :)
|
Streams were clear and perfect for fishing. James river was a little muddy but not bad.
After today's weather.... not so sure. |
Atta boy 'Diver! Great trip report for sure, and looking at the pics from the mountain, I may just have to haul the Shrubs out there for a day trip. Thanks so much for making the effort to post this thread. :)
