Nuisance Badger Residential Area
 

I got a call from a resident in Stony Plain asking if I could take care of a nuisance badger for her. She lives on the edge of town backing onto a green belt and the town is aware of the issue.

Is there a way that a fella could take care of her badger problem without putting people and pets at jeopardy?

I'll help her out if I can but I'm stumped as to how I'd go about it.

If you know the badger is down the hole you could make a jumbo size mole set with a 220 or 330 conibear. By a mole set I mean a underground set. You would have to dig back from the hole entrance to make the set in the underground run the badger uses. Cover the set with a plywood and dirt and it won't catch pets or attract attention in any way. Leave the entrance alone and open and the badger will think he can travel freely out of the run and "SNAP!"

Sort of consider the badger run underground like a beaver run underwater.

You would have to have your resident or registered trapping licence to set traps. F&W or animal control might have a live trap they could set too.

If possible try the 330 what I have found was the other traps just didn't have enough also chain and stake the 330 if you get an undesirable catch they will leave. In my experiences they are one tough prairie bear. Also are you allowed to use a 22lr

I did a search before posting the thread, "Badger" Bill. :) Yours was the first one that I re-read. I'm all for helping someone out but I won't set out 330's due to the safety/liability issues (not to mention the negative publicity).

Would a badger go into a live trap?

Go pour water down the hole and make him come out. From there you have numerous options.

Marty is right just pour a water down the hole and have a 330 over the hole when he comes up whack. He will try and run through the 330.

I'd try this.

The last ones I had to deal with required my backhoe.

Two were in a mound beside a dugout. I had to move all but about two yards of material before they made a break for it. The ,223 ended the race.

I have also called one out of a hole with a distress call. Actually I've done that twice. .223 again finshed the dance.

Just use exhaust and put him to sleep... Cut a dryer vent diameter hole in a small piece of plywood and connect drier vent to exhaust... Simple, just stand on plywood to prevent him from coming up...

A few years ago I had a Neighbor who was in the army. I came home one day and he asked me to help him dispose of something.... Well he shot a badger with his 30-06 in the backyard during the middle of the day... You've seen where I live Dave I'm surprised nobody reported a gunshot! I'm not recommending this or saying it's right but this reminded me of it..... Lol!

Well, the lady was supposed to get back to me on Tuesday if she hadn't heard back from me and she never called. I guess that it isn't as big of an issue as she made it out to be so I'm not going to worry about it. At least I have some ideas if it ever comes up again.

Badgers like tunnels . Maybe set up a piece of culvert or large poly pipe from th hole , like an extension , with the live trap at the end ? They have to eat sometime.
