Powder of choice for a 22-250
I’ve been using varget with a 50 gr vmax forever in my 22-250. It’s the same load my buddy worked up for me prior to reloading myself. It shoots good but I wouldn’t call it a tack driver. Being that my 22-250 is a Tikka it’s sloooow. I’m only at 3500 fps. I’d like to get another couple hundred fps if I can.
What powder and bullet combination are you guys using in a 22-250? |
Sure mine is even slower around 3300 with imr 4895 but it is a tack driver.
I only use hornady spsx 55 but there use to be a warning in box not to exceed 3500 or they are so frangible they may vaporize. |
I used to use imr 4064

Varget was my go to.. I came into a bunch of Leverlution powder for a good price and have switched. Use it in the 7'08 308 and 22-250 with great success.I'm easily getting 3700fps in a 24" barrel
|
H380 was Bruce Hodgdon's powder for the 22/250 ,38 grains of it with a 52 grain bullet.
It is what I used to load because of it!:) Cat |
H4895 - Nosler 50 gr Ballistic tip
|
I've had good success with H414 pushing a 55gr BTHP down a 26" barrel. Picked up some CFE223 to try when my current supply runs out. It looks good on paper, although it definitely generates higher pressures than other powders.
From everything I've heard, Tikkas are notorious for producing slower results? Have you tried your loads in another rifle? Maybe you could pick up a few hundred FPS just by changing brands. |
Another one that I plan on trying is Ramshot Big Game.

Been using benchmark for years with a 50 gr. Nosler bt. It is the best I’ve found for velocity and accuracy.
|
I know lots of guys use H380. Talked to my buddy who used to load for me and he said his accuracy was always better with varget.

Using 3 powders, IMR 4064, Reloder 15, and Varget.
Here are the loads I'm using in my Savage Model 12 BTCSS. All loads are with Lapua brass and CCI 200 primers. Standard reloading disclaimers apply. All group sizes are 5-shots. Sierra 53 HP Match, 34.5 grs IMR 4064, 3587 fps., 0.50" groups Nosler 55 BT. BT., 34.0 grs Reloder 15, 3568 fps, 0.42" groups Sierra 60 HP, 33.5 grs. Varget, 3375 fps., 0.47" groups Sierra 60 HP, 33.5 grs. IMR 4064, 3428 fps., 0.50" groups Will be switching the 55gr. loads to IMR 4064 or Varget once I run out of Reloder 15, that is unless I can find some or someone wants to trade me for some...! :thinking-006: |
Do you have any R26 to trade.

22-250
Mine prefers IMR 4895 and IMR 3031 34gr of either in Win brass and Fed mag primers 55gr Win SP. Didn't care for H380 ?

As much as I'd like to get my hands on it, if you have some R15, give it a try in your 22-250. I find it tends to run faster than Varget in my rifle and may just give you the speed increase you're looking for. |
Been using RL15 in mine with 50gr Vmax's and I'm getting about 3700 out of a 22" barrel.

If you can find some IMR 4320, that may be a good option if you want. But that may be as hard as finding Large Rifle Primers. I pair it with a 55 grain Ballistic Tip and produces good results.
The other load I use is 4064 paired with a 53 grain V-max. This is my alternate to the 4320 load, and the one I shoot most at the range with great consistency at 500 meters. I am thinking if you switch from a 50 to a 55 grain projectile, you may get the results you are looking for. It might not increase the muzzle velocity number, but it will retain the velocity at distance better than the 50 grainers. Just my 2 cents. |
The trouble with using R15 when your supply dries up you need to start all over again .
|
My go to was 4064, I tried a lot of other powders and couldnt get the accuracie of 4064.

Blc-2 works well 50 through 55 gr. pills

For whatever reason I've always used 748 in my 22-250. Don't recall ever checking velocity with it, just shoot coyotes and that's about it.
Anybody else use 748? Maybe one day I should try something else |
