Ball Head .... Really Right Stuff 25 ultra light Camera .... Samsung MV800 Water filter .... Sawyer squeeze filter modified to a MSR red 3L water bag I use this camera because I hunt solo a lot, and I can attach it to the tripod and flip the back up so I can see the photo about to be taken . And it's light weight & small n takes good pics I have tested tons of gear, and spend a lot of $ finding the lightest Gear for the mountain, there's a reason for all the gear I use. There's a lighter tripod out but it's 3x the price of mine And I could lose a few pounds with a new gun.... Last year I was 55 pounds with gun and water weight included This year I want to be under 50pounds . |
Hey BPH last year you were kicking around the idea of using no shelter or bag, did you end up trying that? If so what are your thoughts on how it worked out?

I used the Kifaru Maga tarp, that is only a slip tarp, I can use my trekking poles or wood as poles . I found it to be just as good if not better then my 1 man ultra light tent - no floor. I would build up n level the ground with moss, n add pine branches to sleep on , with no ground sheet. I sleep in my clothes n rain gear, but even tho my R value was higher then a sleeping bag it was cold because where my leg where not touching and I lost body heat. Plus side was two people with gear n bags could fit and still have room to add a small Ti stove. This yr I added the marmot Plasma 40 sleeping bag (+4) and I will sleep in long under wear. And maybe some clothes depending on temp, this will lock in body heat, lost my not using a bag. Still lighter then bringing the extra clothes .... That tent with pegs is under 800 grams Sleeping bag is around 500 grams |
Thanks for the gear list and tips, your experience and knowledge is appreciated. This year I'm leaving the jet boil and fuel at home and taking a Seek Outside's
Ti-stove. The weight penalty will be around a pound but for me it'll be worth it having heat when I drag my old bones out of my bag in the morning. |

Also the times u want hot water now, then stove is lacking in Heating time Ie... If u want a fast hot breakfast, the Soto stove is like 30grams Ill weight it after I unpack from my move. N u can bring a small 250ml gas for in that case. Just a thought |
I myself have just recently got back into sheep hunting, so my gear list is more economical then most. But it still gets me out there.

Hey, have any of you guys tried those wood gas stoves that were developed in Iskut B.C.? There are lots of plans on the net. Two small paint cans or soup cans and weigh about 6 oz. Supposed to boil 2 cu. water in 5 minutes using 2 oz of wood. I made and tried one and it takes a little longer. Nice thing about them is you don't have to pack fuel. There is always something out there to burn. I was thinking about using it if I ever go for Stone or Dall's sheep again.
they are called Bushbuddy, made by Fritz Handel. |

Speaking of disposable stoves, I whipped off a few different beer can alcohol stoves and they work slick! 6 minutes to boil 2 cups of water, using 25 ml of alcohol. They weigh nothing and packing a cup (250ml) of alcohol, will boil you 20 cups of water, so enough for 5 days by my consumption. I'm having fun trying this stuff out. |

Thanks Saul, I didn't start this thread as a pee-ing contest, its just for ideas of the different stuff people use to get out in the hills and to give upgrading ideas, as we can look up the products others have posted and to ask questions about why someone is using something or in my list i put modified by a few things, can ask how or why they did that ie... a lot of people dont know about http://wiggys.com/moreinfo.cfm?Product_ID=5 i really like them for stream crossings but i would spray them down with a heavy coat of silicone spray also i would recommend buying the smaller size then what is recommend it makes them harder to don n off but the tight fit helps to stop leaks |

but what about speed? my stove is only a couple 3 min to get 500ml boiled i would be worried i would crush the beer can in my bag as i pack it small n tight |
One luxury I like to pack sheep hunting when grouse are open is a Hammond game getter. Sure is nice to have fresh grouse at supper once in a while. Turns your rifle into a accurate pellet shooter, good enough to head shoot grouse at 25 yards or so. A fellow from around Edmonton used to or still does make them.

BPH what do you think of the Super Down Jacket/Pants. I was looking at these as well. Can you put your rain pants over them without feeling all bulked up. Is your jacket with the hood or without? Also how durable do they are ?

Although I wouldn't drink this stuff at home even if it all I had On the mtn is what I take, because of it of its speed n ease http://www.nescafe.com/product_detai...om.axcms?Id=74 Next years gun for me is a Kimber Asent 280ai This will save me 2 pounds .... |

When needed I put it over my outer layer when cold n not moving If I was walking threw thick stuff I wouldn't want this to be my outer layer because it's not tuff(not meant to be) I don't find it to bulky under my rain gear, I'm very big on layering so I buy my gear with this in mind, n my rain gear is bigger then the rest of my gear to compensate for this, if your rain gear is tight now, it will be tighter with the SD Kuiu n Sitka are shaped for athletic builds, if you got a beer gut it will make things tighter.... Just to keep in mind.... Best to try it on when u see it to get a idea what size you are OH ... I got a mint Sitka Kelvin Set in med for sale ! |
Tips.....
Most people pack salt. I pack salt in square plastic juice jugs (ease of packing) When it's time to leave and I didn't get to use it, I hide it under wood or moss mark it with gps, now I never pack salt. Or take it in on a scouting trip A small iPod will help you to keep glassing when it gets boring (Should only do this where a bear couldn't sneak up on you) Go and talk to a taxidermist and ask about the cuts to make and caping out If you are not comfortable turning ears n eye lids leave the skull in Plain your trip out, and stay out of the sun, get up early and stay out later And plain your breaks during the hottest times of the day. If you are solo and have to pack out a ram, it's very hard to do it in one trip with all your gear if you keep all the meat . I leap frog it out, take the meat to a spot then hide it on a cool spot Then go back for the head cape n camp, then take it past the meat n hide it go back for the meat and so on. When hiding meat, camp, head, cape, make sure the spot it's put in you can see it from a good ways away, you don't want to surprise a bear getting a free lunch. Try to find things that will do more then one job ie, I only bring 6 tent pegs , I will use sticks or rocks for the rest I can use my trekking poles as tent poles or wood that's around if I'm leaving the tent up. My water filter also holds 3L of water if I need it. Most importation thing........ 1....Is mentally tuff 2.... Endurance 3... Cardio I've seen people with endurance n cardio, just come unglued because they didn't have #1 |
It doesn't happen alot, but when it does it sure is nice to have something to do if you get "weathered in".
On a 20 day back pack trip for Dalls in the Tatshenshini, partner and I got stuck in the tent for two 36 hour stints a week apart.......sweet mother of pearl!!! Each of us took a book and he packed deck of cards.........ended up reading each others book. And I lost a $#% load of rum.....damn cards!!! Helped keep us sane!!! |
