7 mag needs new scope !

Need a new scope for my Browning 7 mag stainless ,so what is a good choice.
This is my back up riffle for my 338 on long trips ,but this year the riffle will be used for antilope this year and maybe one more sheep hunt.
I have always been a Leupold fan ,just not sure if this is the brand i will buy or what power ..WHO'S shooting what on there 7 mag?

i got a leupy vxII 3-9x40 on my 7mm remmag... does wonders in clarity but variable knob is a tight b!tch...... if i was to do it over again vxIII if i had the funds... unless the fixed the knob issue i like the vxII for the price.

You can send that scope to Okotoks to have the power ring issue resolved on warranty.

I used a Leupold 3.5-10X40 VX III on my 7 mag, and now use an FX 6X36 on my 280 AI.

Thats what I had on it was the VX111 3.5 -10 X40.

Its on the 338 now ,and yes very good scope ,20 years old now and never got knocked out ,even after many sheep hunts .

I'd put it back and put a VX II 2-7X33 on the .338

seems that all the new vx IIs iv tried have the same issue though?..... i suppose i could send it in and see if it can get a little looser... but to be honest its sighted in the way i like it and i dont feel like remounting and re sighting it right now.. call me lazy.lol... but its good to know that it could get fixed through warranty thanx chuck

Had a B & L 3-7x32 compact scope on the 338 ,just did not gather the light as well .
I still have it ,just need a tighter /off set mounts to get them on the 7

They are like that and they will "loosen" it for you on warranty. I've got one I may send in, but I'm at the same crossroads you are.

Put 3.5-10X40 on 7mm, buy and put 2.5-8x36 VXIII on 338.

I have a 3.5-10X Leupold Tactical with elevation turret on my 7mm STW sporter and a 4.5-14X Leupold LR/T on my STW Sendero...

a good 3.5-10X or a 4.5-14X is what I would put on a 7 Mag...

7mm

I went with a vxII 3x9x40 with the LR reticle. the zoom adjustment is tight. if I more $$$$ would have went with the VXIII 4X12X40 with the BC reticle. I will be picking up my rig soon, can't wait to get it out to the range.

I've got an older vari-x III 3.5-10x50 on my 7mm. It works great.

I've got a Nikon on my 7mm-08 and it's a great scope. Might be something to look at when you go shopping.

Since the 338 is sighted in I would leave that alone and get a 4.5-14x40 VX-3. Very nice scope. We just put one on a 340. My 7mm has a 4.5-14x50LR on it and its an excellent scope but I would stick with the 40mm objective if I did it again. Its a big scope and heavy. I just bought a 2.5-8 VX-3 and put it on my 460Wby. I really like it so far, and time will tell but its the nicest scope i've looked through in a while. I used to have a 3-9x40 Vari-x II, and used that scope on about 5-6 different guns. No problems and still clear. Held a zero even after getting a beating on a 416 Rigby. I sold it to a buddy for his 7mm. He loves it too. Can't go wrong with any Lupy.

Just heard the nikon monark 3-9x42 is a clearer scope than the leopold vx111
3-9x40 from a guy that has both.
Anyone find this to be true.

noneck180 07-15-2009 09:48 PM

Zeiss Conquest 4.5 x14 x 50 , good enough to shoot anything I can see.

I've owned those as well as other Bushnell Elites and many Leupolds. Not much difference in clarity, as far as I can tell.

I've got a few Leupold "long range" models and wouldn't buy anything else from Leupold now. The ability to bring up a sharp focus at different ranges is something you need to see to believe.

Leupold does seem to be the gold standard with warranty and that's a good thing. As someone mentioned, they have a warranty depot right here in the Republic of Alberta. :)

On other hand, I don't know of anyone who owned a Bushnell Elite or Nikon Monarch and had them fall off on the ground one day while shooting, and I've never had a warranty claim on anything, so sometimes I wonder if all the warranty hype is just hype. Works on me, too, tho.
