Finally!!.....(and spot da elks)....

Had 4 located before the season... but elk move on and I was starting to doubt my luck...

Then I just stopped and thunk a bit. Tis hot.. they be up there.

So up I went... into the thick nasties

And.....

Then I finally got a distant reply.... long ways off so off I went.

Found ye ole elk highway...

So then... hike hike hike

Up up up....

Bumped into 3 cows on one side that milled about for 5 min before they figured I wasn’t and elk.... I felt pretty good at getting into these cows at least... but I wondered.. ‘where r da bulls?’

Then this fellow just graze wandered right up to me at about 25 yards.....

After a 3 minute stand off.... he jumped and ran 40 yards...

I looked around and then noticed this larger light brown rock across the stream in the alders. I raised my binos and sure enough.... broadside bull.... can see horns! This guy was staying stone still at 50 yards for the last 5 minutes or so till me and Lil spiker finished our encounter.

I side move walked 10 yards to my right and he exploded with a jump!!

Swapped ends and headed off! I could tell he had tall mains but couldn’t figure points. I chirped him and he halts broadside... antlers and head behind a big tree...

I raise my 30-06 get him in my scope... 5 seconds and he quarters away... I got a good shot at vitals and he’s walking. I can only count his points on the right side...

1,2.... 2.5......

1,2.... 2 and maybe point 6?

I pass on him.

What a great evening.

Yea.... it’d have been a 4K pack down down and across to get the quarters to the truck.

I passed on the shot on the second bull... rifle.. 3 or better.

I took the pics cause I figured with the cows thinking something was up and dummy there staring at me.... the herd would prolly explode and that’s be all she wrote.

I’m still not sure if that other bull was legal or not.......... it haunts....

Seen elk in some high tough spots while sheep hunting years ago. Once we get some snow later next month I hope to see some in areas that will not kill me trying to one out down to the truck or quad. That was a great day you had.

I hope to spot this week myself up in the nasty country where quads aren’t seen or heard. Buglebull likes to bugle with the bulls.

Nice story

Enjoyed that thanks.

The problem with elk hunting is you never seem to be able to back the truck right up to where you dressed it.....and it always seems like more than a 5 minute walk to the truck. Never.

Heh

Ain’t that truth right there....

Only once.. and that was last year. We got the bail truck right up to my cow (had a late season draw).. and I was hunting with the landowner.

2 elk on the bed deck.... just chained er up.

Then drive to the big garage... chained her up to the hoist...
two of the boys there got to skinning and quartering before I could finish my rye....

It’s nice to know good people.

But 95% of my elk..... pack on back or toboggan..... ugh.

I had a cow like that, late tag and a friend was having his cattle feed destroyed. So I was sitting in his corral at first light, clobbered a nice fat young cow 5 minutes later as they were heading for Timber. By the time I had my knife in her, the tractor was there, so an easy gut. In the back of my truck, and at my butcher's....all in under an hour from when I squeezed the trigger. It helped that the 180 gr TSX from the .300 WM flattened her in her tracks, she didn't take a step.

Hunting doesn't get any easier than that. But I really liked it....
