Wide open ,minimal ice around the dam. Other Kananaskis lakes are frozen but you will half to walk bit

I would take ‘wide open’ as little to no ice. As in wide open water. With the weather we’re getting now and for the next week I wouldn’t expect that to improve.

historically those big deep lakes in K Country aren't safe for fishing until December.

What he means is there is a bit of ice around the NW end of the Spray Lakes by the Goat dam. I wouldn't go on it. By the time you get to Driftwood, there is (was - on Tuesday) sparse chunks of floating ice. By the time you get to Spurling Creek, it is wide open as far as the eye can see. It has been above zero up there all week long and the last 48hrs it's been almost double digit highs. It will be a while. As ScottN just said, those big mountain lakes won't be safe until well into December.
