Possible places to relocate to
Hey Everyone,
I am looking to relocate to a new town in AB or BC with my spouse. We are hoping to receive some feedback on some good locations. In terms of wants and needs we do not have too much. -Schools looking to hire as my spouse is a teacher -If it is a very small town ideally it would be within a couple hours if a big city for shopping. -I am looking for a location that has employers who have rotational schedule (4 on 4 off, 7/7 etc) I am a HD mechanic so should have options. -Ideally not 8 months of winter but we can wish. -Cost of living not outrageous -Not top of the list but a decent hospital would be nice. -Not a town that is not crashing or relies on one industry to support it -Closer to hunting and fishing the better but not a priority this time. |

Good to hear Trout. I'm still with the old hide 38 years later but she's growing on me. :)

Wait, you mean no one else picked up on the "my friend" is looking for divorce advice thread? |
If we're all being judgemental based upon past threads, I will say the lack of concern for geographic proximity to the kids is a bit puzzling.
Jerk a-hole comment aside, maybe check out Cochrane if it's in your budget? Get a FIFO job out of Calgary, close to the big city but still all the amenities right there, schools for the spouse, close to the mountaisn, etc. |

Crowsnest Pass. Sparwood is always looking for HD mechanics.

Iron horse is always looking for good hands, there are a couple more oilfield outfits here as well. Farm machinery places all seem to need mechanics especially, with spring just around the corner. Not as good of pay? as the patch but your home every night. Probably the cheapest utilities in Alberta, and as Faststel said housing prices are reasonable. 330+ days of sunshine, 3 hours from Calgary, 3 hours from Lethbridge. 1.5 hours from shopping in Montana, Hot springs, 1 hour east and about 4 hours to the Rocky Mountains. Fishing, hunting, varmints all within an hour of the city. Little to no serious crime. Also the green house capital of Canada. UMMMM fresh, cheap veggies. What is not to like? |
As I live in Smithers I would agree it fits some of your criteria. Wife's Job will be relatively easy but you are looking at mining camp rotations. There are a couple HD shops in town but not the schedule you are looking for. Shopping is ok locally for grocery and regular things but Costco is 4hr to PG or 2hrs to Walmart in terrace. Gun range is off your back deck. Elk are starting to be a problem and I will extend an invitation for some of my pet bears, bears are like coyote numbers here. Huston, vanderhoof or south of PG could be considered as well.
Winter is 5 to 6 months with way more snow than AB but much milder and 0 wind B. . |
Trout bug, you are a wild man. Holy moly frijole, you are a wild man.

You know how it goes here...pictures or it didn't happen. :) Congrats BW |
10 years ago I would have suggested a nice parcel of land just outside Kimberley. Warmer side of the mountains, great fishing and hunting and not too far from Cranbrook for shopping, etc.
But now...the hipsters look to have moved in and taken over. Last time I was cruising around the Platzl, I think I counted three beard care/natural deodorant/aroma therapy shops... :) |
