Trolling a Tube for Lakers?? (Video)
 

Well i had been asked if you could troll a tube for lakers. As I've never tried before I could not answer that question. I ended up picking my buddy James up off the dock to set out for the sole purpose of attempting to troll tubes for lakers. All I can say is I will defiantly be adding this to my arsenal of trolling methods as it was highly successful.

Anyone else have any different lure presentations that the stumbled upon that work for lake trout?

With a bigger sized dodger and a short leader I couldn’t see why it wouldn’t be productive. I would maybe try a lighter type of jig inside instead of a big chunk of lead that way it would have more action under the water. I have yet to try any but I just received some lighthouse Jugheads and will insert a empty tube into one of them and try that. Next week.

Would it be all that different from trolling a white/silver hootchie behind a big Dodger?

That may cause a very unique action! I liked the added vibration and flash of the chaser tail and think this may have benefited to a successful day.

I've never trolled hootchies for lake trout before.

Any big ones this year? Last spring we caught two over 20lbs jigging where your at.

Good video. Try a lead head jig tied with the longer white whitetail deer tail hair instead of a rubbertail or tube. The smaller the lead head the better the action.

Ran across a weird laker set up kind of by accident. Had a flasher and salmon fly hanging straight down in the water near the bottom as The boat was a-drift and we were dealing with a tangle and reel malfunction on the other side of the boat on the other rod. So my buddy is unravelling line I'm holding his rod and out of the corner of my eye I see my rod double over with a fish on .....

I guess the boat was pitching with the waves (causing the flasher and fly) to become a jig ......

Reeled up a 7-8 laker.

When lakers are active - proves they will hit just about anything.

I tried using a micro flasher occasionally when jigging deep for lakers with a smaller (but heavier lure) below - sometimes it works better than anything else - often times it doesn't work at all - I guess it depends on the mood of the fish.

nothing over 20 yet. the biggest was probably that 14-15lbs range.

I love using a little hair jig when they are finicky in the winter time.

I think that is very true its just a matter of getting your presentation on front of the fish and if they are in the mood they will hit it!

Awesome vid, wish I could make it this year not sure but ya never know. Interesting set up. Hungry bite I think. Just a thought when bringing the fish to the boat and rod still loaded ( bent over with fish on) and you grab the line, and hook releases, (instant catch and release, for the fish, perfect!! I was at pierce lake the last 4 days fishing was not great. We fished from 5:00am till 11:00pm every day boated over a dozen lakers do not to great. What we found worked a bit better was a 2oz tube just casted back behind the boat then trolled. Just a plain tube no spinner or anything.

The fishing can be awesome in August and September! We've had some awesome days with many big fish in the boat in late August. Just remember laker fishing closes September 16th.

I noticed last time i was at Pierce that the lakers were a lot smaller overall. So we downsized a bit and started catching a few more. Even ice fishing we went to a jig and a parkers minnow and had non stop 2-3lber action with he odd bigger one.
